The dust cap has been glued and the middle piece is missing. Do I care? How can it be fixed? Does it require a full recone to do it right? If one woofer is reconed, should the other one be done as well to match properly?

The center screen has no audible effect, there to keep
objects out. It'll work fine, just make sure the tear is
WELL glued and not buzzing. I'd try to get an exact replacement
dome from Great Plains in the meantime.

Marty is right..Just the dust cap..Simply speakers has what you need and it's easy to replace..If I can do it,anyone can.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
The caps from SS don't have vents.
it is really for that purpose, to keep dust out of the voice coil. What worries me is that the woofer cone itself appears to be flexed at about 5 o'clock. This will undermine the rigidity of the cone.
It kind of looks like a recone is in your future.....sorry.
View of good woofer above and pair below.
I see what you mean, but unfortunately, all I have right now are pictures. From the looks though, I'd guess that whatever happened to the dustcap did tweak the cone a bit too.
The other one looks real good though. So the $64 question is whether reconing one will cause them to sound different?

For what it's worth, I have two JBL 2220s that have both been reconed - but not at the same time. The measured moving mass is about 30 grams different between them. The kits DO change over time!
I don't hear a major difference, which suggests the other variations from perfect are bigger - cheap boxes, room acoustics, etc. - but if you are more of a perfectionist than I am, then you will want identical kits meaning do both at the same time.
Do you hear a difference between the two channels?
I only finally scored my pair of 19s two weeks ago. Congrats!I would consult with Great Plains Audio as unclestu suggested. They are the experts; see link below. Call them by phone. Send them the pictures. They can give you an opinion, however if funds were tight, I would only do the one, the other looks to be in perfect shape. They can recharge the magnet while they have the speaker.
The problem with mine is a little easier than yours. The highs are down in one of my horns, so I think that I will only need new diaphragms.
BTW, did you get the grills as well?

IIRC The recone kits offered are the current versions of the drivers, so they may be slightly different sonically. Call GPA and check first.

I believe Great Plains Audio, who took over the Altec speaker factory or at least their tooling, has replacement dust caps. They provide them for their recone kits. That being said, the dust cap had a mesh insert in the middle to vent the pole piece. If you would like to restore it, order the dust cap and carefully cut out the existing dust cap and reglue the new part.
Oh yeah don't bother emailing GPA, use the phone in order to get prompt service.........
The big question is, do the woofers sound different. If they don't, I wouldn't worry.
