Sorry if I missed them, but do you have any graphs of Karlson designs which you'd like to share? On axis, 45 degrees off axis, with driver and enclosure info.
Thanks!
:)
here's the treble of an X15 copy with a 1.875"ID x 7.25" length internal slotted pipe - that K-tube isn't as smooth as the 1"ID type - this is an indoor measurement so a grain of salt applies - the mic is nearly 90 degrees off axis. The x15 has reflections from the chamber/upper reflector out the upper portion of the main aperture along with the highest F's riding down the pipe's long axis. This particular pipe had a concentric angle sliced 1" ID piece as some sort of scattering (my term) mechanism.
here's a "small" 18" coupler with IIRC, an Eminence 18" with qts ~0.25/fs~30 - its rear chamber was only 80 liters - here's how it looked at 1/24 octave resolution outdoors at 0/45 and 60 degrees off axis. It was quite punchy with very little cone motion at high spl
when I get one balanced then I have something smaller than most front hons which is very dynamic and effortless.

The Altec 511B with 806A graphs look quite good. No wonder I like them so much.
...but consider the scale at the left. By my eye the combo is -30dB @ 20KHz, -15 dB @ 15KHz and -10dB @ 10KHz, all ref 1-2KHz, all approx. Used w/o EQ I can see where the reputation for "prominent" midrange comes from. Are yours eq'ed? Passive or active?
Yes, they were designed to have the HF rolloff to reduce noise beyond the 8kHz limit of optical soundtracks. I used mine with a EV T35 tweeter kicked in with a 2uF series cap. That added the missing HF from the Altecs. In my experience (511/802D), they will always need a tweeter to add missing info above 8-10k. I was referring more to the smooth midrange on the graphs.
I'm using 811s with BMS4550s for response out to ~18KHz with a little passive eq in the xover (1KHz) Nice sparkle to the top end w/o the issues of a 3 way and no "horn" coloration to speak of. Not as beamy as one might expect either. I'm pleased considering their "reputation".
fwiw I like 511b as a midhorn - I've not tried a hotter on the top driver with 511 - there's got to be a fair amount of beaming in its top octave.
