You REALLY should be talking to Don Davis, "Dr. Field Coil" before proceeding any further. I think he will steer you to Ubangies, NOT Shearer bins, and NOT the woofers you are chasing. He is experienced more than anyone I know personally on such vintage RCA bass systems. Look him up, save yourself some heart ache. Send him this post from me.

Hi Jeff,
Do you have current info on Don? To me , he's across the parking lot at te studioHe says that he has no info on you anymore. I am still listening to a L-R mockup of Record One. Marantz 8b is on the bench for recapping.

Not aiming for the ultimate in sound quality I love collecting restoring etc and listening to vintage but for audiophile use I have many other horns. The reason for the Shearer is its what was under this horn to begin with.
Jeff,
The RCA MI 9448 is the compression driver used with both the Ubangi and the Olson bin, usually in pairs on a 'Y' throat. They really do sound great.
Thanks, I have never have "kept up with" the RCA MI numbers and what was what, so your post was helpful.

Thought some may enjoy this.
Kloss, as you know this was the Altec Lansing loudspeaker product line circa 1941 or 1942. I have stood in that spot in recent years and photographed the building; it has not even been painted inside since those days. The white square which looks like a piece of paper on the floor is actually a patch to the concrete slab; it has blended in nicely in the 70 years since the picture was taken. Note the third system from the front: it is a small 800Hz. theatre system utilizing Iconic components. It would have to be considered an A7 ancestor, though I've never seen one of these turn up in the modern era.

Yeah, that thing is very cool. Looks like a miniaturized WE front horn baffle but surely it is sealed box on the rear rather than open back. Always wanted to know more about that one.
Hi Joe!
I have poor, retouched front and rear photos of this system in an old Altec service manual. It was called the 18-W-8 system, and unusually for the era used permanent magnet drivers. The 901 h.f. driver was used with the H-808 tar filled (Iconic) horn. A 1565 15" woofer was mounted on the H-24 horn baffle, whose dimensions are listed as 84" wide by 60" high by 18 3/4" deep. The woofer just hung off the back with no rear enclosure. So it was just a short, straight sided front horn terminating in in the flat baffle. Maybe it didn't sound too bad, though it didn't stay in the line for long. The 1565 woofer was described as having efficiency down 4 dB. compared to the 415 field coil unit. Yeah, ain't it the truth!
That is wild! I didn't know that the open baffle front horn scheme survived the WE wide range era!! PM, no less!
The above-mentioned link is the only pic I ever saw of that exotic system. Love to hear one but this will probably never come to pass...
Sure is a amazing collection.
Thanks, that's a great pic. I really like the little box on the lower left corner.
For those of you who dig vintage cinema gear and for a change from WE, Altec, RCA or Klangfilm, here's some stuff by Philips.

I am thinking about getting my first projector. A seimans 2000 since I like the amps and speakers and have the amps already. I suspect good analogue film must be nice to watch for the real colors.
Kloss you shouldn't be bidding until the last ten seconds.Thats how ebay works. Only the sellers mates bidd earlier lol.
Do you own films that you can show on this projector?
Dave
nope are they rare?
the 'little box in the lower left corner' is a Lansing Iconic. I'm in the midst of building a repro pair to go with my repro Western Electric 91B amplifiers. I'm shooting for kind of a home theater circa 1937 sort of thing.
With the full baffles?
Thanks for the link.
