got Decade 36 in mail - one has voice-coil rub adn funky spider -(other may be funky ? but doesn't rub) - its bulged out at 3 & 9 o'clock and sunk in @ 6&12 - hope can get it so dosn't rub - its not too bad![]()
I like the smell too.
Bill
Should have been in subject line lacquer thinner
would have to be nicer than acetone! - whachu up to for designing and learning?
Let it soak in and set. Soak it some more and start moving the cone in and out.
if I can find my bottle - so that'll unwarp the spider - guess isopropyl won't work

It has to be something that softens phenolic resin.
My friend Steve told me they used this trick on the production line at JBL.
the spider doesn't look perfect but its not rubbing and there's less warp - big thanks - hope it dries in this condition - still kind of working it - there's some sunken areas i'd like to lift.. (seller couldn't see any problem in my pix above) - there's a small dimple in the tweeter dustcap - any idiot-proof way to pull it and not make it worse?

I always used a T-handled pin with a right-angle bend about 1/8" or so from the tip.
I would poke it through the center, pull, rotate the pin, and pull some more.
The dome is crushed and soft, so I would put on a dab of hair-spray with a toothpick.
If you leave it crushed there is a real chance that the coil will warp.
I never really cared for the L36, the L100/4311 was a much better sounding speaker. The L16/L19 with a subwoofer sounds much smoother and can play quite loud (even louder than the L100/4311).
what screws up L36's sound relative to L100? 125A + inductor? spider looks decent today on 125A - -btw, I had L26 in early 1970's - Mario Del Monaco's voice sounded 30 foot wide - do you like L100 better than Heresy I? which other JBL bookshelf sound good to you? can one make a L100-like speaker with heavy cone B&C 15"? what might work for mid? all i have laying are are Alpha 6 plus some Misco neo 6"

I ordered 160z -- -thanks for the info - maybe it'll work on other spiders too - hmm - just found a few oz - so I'll brush some on tonite - Decade 36 for its faults sounds better than some of my stuff - will strengthening my corners fix K-horn flabby & ugly bass? - walls are vinyl siding-2x6-3/4" plywood then sheetrock and ring for a long time

Don't let too much acetone get into the glue lines at VC or basket ends of the spider. It'll soften up many of the older adhesives, possibly to the point of misalignment. Since it evaporates rapidly, properly directed air can help prevent possible issues with misapplied acetone.
might be too late
