The early 3 legged ones used alnico magnets. The A's (4 legged frame)were ceramic. This is the same as the 'Michigan' line. The early 3 legged ones are alnico, the later ones went to ceramic. I have a pair of the early ones with alnico's. I dont really see any difference in the 12" Michigan vs. the 12" Wolverine. Both had the same alnico magnet, 2" VC, etc. The Wolverine had slightly different specs as to the frequency response, but what were the real differences? The Wolverine line was discontinued by the early 70's, but they still listed the Michigan series.
... the early datasheet for the LS-8/12/15 indicates that the 12 (unsuffixed) and the 15 used Indox (ceramic) magnets!?
I'm just sayin'...
all the best,

IME, of the LS and MC series drivers, only the LS-8 has an alnico magnet. The LT-12 is also ceramic. I have a 3-leg LS-12 that I am using in a console radio (restoration project) and it is ceramic.

Hummm...I have a pair of Michigan MC12's with the 3 spoke frame, and they are definately alnico. I also have a pair of the LS-8's, which are alnico. I just assumed the 3 spoke Wolverines were also alnico, since everything else is almost identical to the Michigan series.
The EV spec sheet (found at http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Speakers/EDS/) for the Michigan series does specify alnico for the MC-12 and MT-12. OTOH, ceramics are specified for the LS-12, LS-15 and LT-12. The MT-12 appears to use the same small ring radiator annular horn tweeter that was used in the LT-8, and not the small diffraction horn (TW-35) used in the LT-12.
I never understood the rationale for carrying both the Wolverine and Michigan lines. They appeared to be essentially the same (as you said). IME, both lines offered remarkable value and performance in their price range. The MC-8a (ceramic) is among the most neutral and least flawed 8-inch full range drivers I have encountered.
