Saw a report on CNBC this morning for a new "particle board". It uses a soybean based glue. Claim is that it is lighter and much stronger than particle board. No mention of MDF. Their first product is skateboards. The company is E2E Materials. Not much info out there yet but it might be worth keeping in mind.

Low mass and high strength aren't particularly important WRT speaker cabinets. Mass is generally your friend (except for pro sound). Regular particle board laminated to void free plywood works as well as anything IME.
