Hi Lokie,
I ask this in sincerity. Could you point me to a track of hers you find is multi-layered?
When I listen I think it's too simple and lacks texture, and that the music around it doesn't help. Still, I like it now and then. :)
However, I know speakers a lot more than I know singing and music, so any insight you can shed on what I'm missing would be appreciated.
Best,
Erik

I never said her music was layered, I said her voice was layered.
Here's a duet w Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie, by most people, is considered a wonderful singer. She has soul, range, great tone etc...
But when I hear Norah she just stands out with more of everything. More soul, more range and her tone is just superb. Her low notes are smokey and rich and her high notes are pure, clean and effortless.
Lots of great singers but it's the last bit of authentic unforced emotion that makes them really special. I think she has that. And I especially appreciate when she is accompanying herself w the organ or piano. The combination is just a coherent bundle of artistic richness. Here's a video of a Bob Dylan cover, "Forever Young" that exemplifies her emotional quotient.
I know this all subjective and I don't expect everyone to have good taste.

Great performance. BTW - love the DVD of the BR show.
..."I know speakers a lot more than I know singing and music.."One of the most tragic posts I have ever seen.
So I guess music is something you have to suffer with as you "listen" to the sounds your system makes. The indignity. :)

Not at all. I listen to music all the time but I don't know what I'm listening to. I just enjoy it. :)
My one music theory class was about classical, not jazz or folk. :)
So when some one makes a statement about music or a voice I don't understand I ask for more information.
Best,
Erik
I hear ya, but it is far easier to understand music, which I believe to be an innate ability then speakers or digital audio. And far more rewarding.
