I thought the performance was very good, but there are a huge number of excellent Debussy Preludes recordings these days - even a couple of others in 24/96 by bigger names (Koroliov and Bavouzet). Of course, a bigger name by itself doesn't guarantee a better performance, but the competition IS fierce.
As for the SQ, it seemed to have an emphasis in the mid-bass region that other recordings don't have (at least on my system). In view of the good reports about the other free samples in this thread, I'll try a couple of others.
BTW, thanks for the heads up - I believe I'd seen this site years ago and then somehow forgotten about it without downloading any of the free samples.
Follow Ups:
I concur about the sound of the piano on the Debussy recording....more mid bass than I am accustomed to, somewhat less treble sparkle, but a very very natural feeling about the placement of the instrument in space. Since tonal balance can vary depending on where one sits in the hall, I was not bothered a bit by this. I enjoyed the interpretation quite a bit too.
...and had EXACTLY the same impression about the piano sound. It was a bit dark sounding. Maybe its that particular instrument. I compared it to Bavouzet's recording of the same piece (a RBCD quality download) and his instrument had a bit more upper octave sparkle. I preferred Bavouzet's performance. Both pianos (which sound like Steinway's) sound very good to me.
