Another format that failed on launch?
Anyone tried these?

I have dozens of (classical) blu-ray audio recordings, and, for the most part, they're magnificent in their sound quality. (And by this I mean that they have some of the absolutely best engineering I've ever heard on my system.) However, from what I'm seeing now, their heyday seems to have already passed: Naxos, which was a big supplier in this format, has cut way back on their new issues and perhaps has even stopped with them entirely (?). And UMG (or whatever they're called now - I can't keep up!) made a huge strategic mistake in refusing to take advantage of the multi-channel capabilities of the format and issued a bunch of titles in 2-channel only - even in cases where previous DVD-A and SACD issues of the same performances already had multi-channel tracks available.
So, basically, I don't anticipate much long-term success for the format - although I hope I'm wrong. The Tacet, 2L and Sono Luminus labels have put out some fabulous albums on blu-ray audio, and I hope they continue to do so. But, at some point, it's all going to be streaming anyway! ;-)
I'm including the link to a review of one of the (2-channel only!) UMG blu-ray audio releases (Dvorak's New World Symphony with Fricsay) which I originally posted here, but then later posted over at Amazon:
Steven Wilson has released his own music, and done remixes of Jethro Tull and Yes that are available on Blu-ray with lots of extra features, Here's an example of what's on his album Hand Cannot Erase:
The Blu-ray Disc edition offers audiophiles the chance to experience the album in its full glory with 24bit stereo files, plus 5.1 mixes of album (DTS 96/24 5.1 surround & Dolby AC3 5.1 surround). The Blu-ray also features instrumental versions of the album tracks, plus bonus track.
Also included is a Studio Documentary which is 23 minutes long. Tracks include - Luminol(12.10), Drive Home (7.37), The Holy Drinker (10.13), The Pin Drop (5.03), The Watchmaker (11.43), The Raven That Refused To Sing (7.57). Plus a Bonus Version of Drive Home.
Get 'em while you can, I say!!!
Blue -Ray Audio ? best to have mch SACD
Best to get with the times and have both.
The times is streaming ,but I am not going to get into it.
Sure, I have some. Kal likely has...tons. Lots of music more to his taste on BD than there is of mine.
For one thing, they can be a bit expensive for the average consumer. They sure don't get much prominence in stores.
For another, the QC at the company who makes many that I have is deplorable, from the quality of BD blanks, to the quality of the source files used to create the masters, to the provenance of the sources, to the idiotic authoring. So many things to not like about them... Have you ever heard a BDP playing an "out-of-round" disc? Besides being ridiculously noisy, what with the laser servo motor continually buzzing around, it can't be good for the spindle motor either. Too much garbage and we'll get another DVD-A fiasco.
That said, many are made by reputable companies, and I'm very happy with them. I have even found a new appreciation for some tunes in the new mch mix, tunes I didn't much like before. Some of the mch mixes are truly excellent, done by people who get the sensibilities of the originals and aren't just making another "product".
I do not have a decent (to me) HDMI-input DAC. I use an HDMI audio stripper to get the DSD and 24/96 or 24/192 stereo audio off the BDs. It is usually pretty decent, worth the small effort. The hi-rez stereo mixes are *sometimes* quite different than the mch ones, and I mean not in the obvious way, such that I'm sure the same person didn't do them...I sometimes have a problem with that...
