Hello, again. I've been away for a while and I'm considering a new player. I prefer physical media and one-box, two-channel machines.
Anyone have any actual experience with the new K-05X? I'd prefer a K-03X but that's too far a stretch for me at the moment. Thanks in advance for any constructive comments.

The SQ character of Esoteric players has always been too clean and clinical for my tastes probably because the SACD signal is converted to PCM ahead of D/A conversion in the players, a fault with many SACD players including Sony who invented the DSD /SACD format. Don't rule out Krell who have confirmed that the signal remains as DSD throughout and Marantz of course.
I agree re the clinical sound of Esoteric players but I doubt if it is because the SACD signal is converted to PCM. I use the Sony XA5400ES player with HDMI into the Sony DA5400ES receiver with HATS that has a 32 bit dac , the SACD signal is converted to PCM it sounds excellent not clinical.

DA 5400 ES & DA 6400 ES models.
Disbeliever-
how do you like the H.A.T.S system? Sony only offered (2) receivers to match the 5400 ES spinner?
Yes I can hear the benefit of the Sony HATS system found on the UK versions of both DA5400ES & DA6400ES receivers. The US version DA5400ES did not include HATS only the DA6400ES.When combined with the XA5400ES player the mch SACD is the best I have heard including far more expensive set ups.
Excellent.
I am the owner of an Esoteric K-01X player. It replaces an Oppo BDP-105 player that was good as a playback unit. However there is no comparison between the two players as there shouldn't be when comparing the build and prices of both units. My reason for replying is that with this unit it is far from being clean and clinical. Perhaps that was more evident with the older K-05X? The soundstage is so wide and deep it amazes me that it was in the recording prior to the player being inserted in my system, I just never heard it with the Oppo. Instruments have their proper timbre and vocals both male and female sound natural. I am running the K-01X into an Audio Research Ref5 SE preamplifier. If I had believed every comment about the Esoteric players, I would have never bought one.
Thanks! for sharing- Sharpstat.
I do enjoy Esoteric spinners for SACD playback only.
I find the regular CD playback too lean and dry for my taste.
That isn't evident on the K-01X player. This post would make more sense if you heard the new players. I do remember reading your comments before when I was inquiring about purchasing one. To quote Hendrix, "You've got your God and so do I"! ;)
Good to read- it is not difficult to replace any Oppo spinner.
I agree with Hired Fox re Esoteric players, I would not waste my money on buying one.
Thanks! for sharing- hiredfox.
I am more familiar w/ the Esoteric DV/SA 50-50 series.
If you want the best in SACD playback, then, Esoteric is for you.
I understand that as one goes up their chain of players, the listening experience gets better as well.
Mainly interested in the SACD playback.
Thanks
