Over the years I think of this group as the most knowledgeable but this may be a problem for a different group. Please direct me if so.
I have a problem with my Hi-Res system. I am periodically getting a drop in volume in the left channel but not to zero. So the balance becomes off for a while (5-20 minutes) and then comes back. If I change sources, it still happens so it must be from the preamp, amp, or speakers. I switched the preamp-to-amp cables (left and right) and the drop switched channels. I interpret that as a problem in the preamp.
1. Is that the correct logic?
2. Have any of you had that problem?
3. If the preamp is the problem, has anyone had a similar problem with a Marantz AV7701 unit (one year old) or something similar?
What causes that kind of change in a digital system?
Thanks for any information.

If this is the case it is the cables OR anything upstream.
What happens if you switch the inputs on the pre?
The Well Tempered Computer
All sources exhibit the problem so it is downstream of the preamp. It could be the cables too. Will check, thanks.
Check all connections on the pre-amp.
Then, switch cables to determine if the problems follows.
Look on the back of the Marantz, is it made in Japan?
If not Japan, it was probably made in china (china=junk).
If you switch cables left to right, and the problem follows, then the problem is the cables.
AB.
