The new Analogue Productions Decca Classical re-issues on SACD:
The Espana and Bruch are shipping - anyone have them already? On the road this week - can't wait to get home and give them a spin.
Thx,
Paul
Follow Ups:
Was able to spend a bit of time listening to these new releases this weekend.
Couple notes:
1) The SACD liners have both the Decca and London album covers included so you can face outwards whichever one is your 'favorite'.
2) The Espana (but not the Oistrakh) is only indexed by piece as opposed to movements within a piece. IOW, the Espana has only 4 tracks (C. Espagnol, Andalusia, Espana and Sp.Dances) while the Oistrakh has 7 tracks across the Bruch and Hindesmith pieces. Wonder why the Espana disc was cut this way.
First impressions - these discs sound outstanding.
The Espana is well known and much sought after. I have this in London BB and will look to do a closer comparison to it over turkey weekend in a couple weeks (can't help myself). But I must say it is awesome to be able to listen to the Espana w/o the occasional tick/pop ;-)
The Oistrakh is rated top of the charts by Gray/Moon in their FFSS book. Opening movement of the Hindesmith has some really nice bass that sounds real, weighty if you will. It is a piece that I'm not familiar with so will need to circle back to it again. The Bruch piece is more traditional. My only nit with this recording is at times Oistrakh is really 'in your face' - is this an over abundance of 'spot-lighting'? Dunno. I'm not an expert on the period recording techniques.
That's it guys. Sorry if the above isn't more detailed or scientific but these are my first impressions. Need to run.
Thx,
Paul
Thanks! for sharing- Paul.
The more I listen the more I am convinced that when it comes to emotional content, David Oistrakh is the master.
Paul,
I hope you plan to report on the results of your listening. I have several in my shopping bag pending your review.
