i have done abit of searching on this topic, JI havent found a lot so far. I realise that there are playrs for them, but I have heard that some of the players are ones that will only play one track, rather than continuos flow. I have also read (online) that the output of the ipad might not be up to playing the files. I would be interested in hearing form anyone with experience with this
Cheers

See my review of the Aurender Flow (linked below) for details on how to
play hi-rez files on the iPad using Apple's camera connection kit.

I use an iPad mini or iPhone with JRemote for JRiver and also the Oppo Media Control App with one Oppo 103D in a spare system. For an older Oppo BDP-93 in the bedroom system, which feeds my outdoor speakers they just have an Andriod App. So I bought a cheapo $80 (Android) tablet at Sam's Club for that.
Your post, I believe, refers to using control applications on tablets. However I think that the OP is actually referring to using an i-pad as a server for music files with a player installed on the same device. As you will see he refers to the suitability of the output from the i-pad for playing the files.I hope that my interpretation is correct but apologies in advance if it is not.

exactly
Your interpretation is the way I understood the O.P.
While he can use the iPad to play files that reside on it locally, that would not be how I would do it today.
For the iPad, the O.P. can purchase what is called a "Camera Connection Kit" which provides a USB port which in turn can be connected to a DAC. There are a couple of add-on players for 'hi-res' including at least one that will play DSD files but the whole setup seems a bit kludgy to me.
These days I use the iPad or iPhone for control purposes only, with my music residing on my Mac. He could do the same thing with a PC or NAS.
Itunes is terrible. I have a music server and have many 44.1 albums on it. But I also have many double native DSD recordings that are quite superior to even HD Tracks in PCM.
But even JRiver's MC20 or MC21 are not easily controlled from an Ipad. I am now using a MS Surface 3 to control what is playing. But there really is no app like Remote to control really high definition.
