Classical or rock, up to 24/192, what would it be? I've got a new USB DAC and I'm trying to see if hi-rez is for me. Must be great music, not just pristine sound quality. Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I would go to either the Linn or BlueCoast Records sites and take a listen. I have not been disappointed by anything that I have bought from either and have also found some great 2496 bargains at eClassical.com
I have some 2496 from all of them that are just tremendous. I am 68 and have found that I cannot really hear the improvement in 24/192 even though as a high school math teacher I know it is better.
I am doing much more headphone listening these days on my AKG K701s as it really helps me hear the little things that my full audio systems don't seem to be able to do for me, but I think that is my hearing issues.
I am about to buy one more set of"cans" that will be the Focal Spirit Pros at $349 that have gotten the best of reviews for sealed headphones. My new AKG K721 mk2s are way better than my pairs of Sony 7506s, but still not quite as good as the 701s.
I know you will like what you hear as I only have an affordable ($150) Steinberg UR-22 24/192 usb interface, but it is clearly a major improvement in my computer's sound card, so much so that no one can say getting into high rez audio is a rich man's game. Yamaha now owns Steinberg.
Even for an office system this would be a great buy. It has a great headphone amp with its own control and a line out with its own control as well. I bought mine at Sweetwater.com

Beck's new album "Morning Phase" is without a doubt the greatest Wake & Bake album ever recorded.
The Steven Wilson remix of Jethro Tull's "Benefit" is exceptional. Makes me want to try all the SW remixes.

Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
Here's my favorite classic rock download at the sampling rate you want.
sit back and enjoy!
I also like Joni Mitchell's "Court & Spark" and Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat"...

I assume you're wanting stereo, rather than multi-channel? In any case here is one of the most wonderful two-channel classical recordings I've encountered during the last decade or so:
It's on the Acousence Classics label from Germany. The orchestra may be second- (or even third- ) tier, but I guarantee you will not care - and in any case, second-tier orchestras today are WAY better than they used to be. The guy who engineers these recordings tends to use seven microphones, so it's not quite "minimally microphoned", but it's still shocking how good it is. I was especially impressed by the Rodrigo "Concierto de Aranjuez" ("the fine Corinthian leather" - if you're old enough to remember that classic Ricardo Montalban commercial for the Chrysler Cordoba!), where the integration of the soloist with the rest of the orchestra is truly ourstanding (not overpowering, as in most concerto recordings, and yet crystal clear!). Another great track is the Marquez Danzon No. 2, one of the signature pieces of LA Phil conductor Gustavo Dudamel, whose own performance doesn't outclass this one in the least, while this one is SO much better recorded. A couple of months ago, when I checked which track of my 1600 albums now on iTunes I've listened to the most, this was the one! I can't say enough good things about this recording. It's available on the Presto Classical and eClassical sites - here's the eClassical link, where you can listen to the sample tracks if you're interested. The samples won't be hi-rez of course, but you might be able to get an idea. . .
(The only thing that bothers me is that the sampling rate of the 24-bit download is not explicitly stated, at least on the site I linked to. It used to be available as a 24/192 download, but the file at this link may be only 24/96. In any case, I downloaded the 24/96 file myself - from another site where it's no longer available - and my comments are based on that 24/96 download.)
Ralf still has it available on his original Acousence site, at 24/192 from a DVD-Rom disc. $20.
I keep forgetting about the acousence site itself. For some reason, I'm not able to order off that site myself because of a problem with PayPal, so I've had to find other sites (Linn, eClassical, Presto Classical - and the availability on the Linn site no longer exists) for access. Thanks again for the reminder!
I do remember the Cordoba commercial! Thanks
Very nice, with high frequencies going up to about 38KHz:
One of the most spacious, dynamic recordings I've heard. Thank you!
If you are willing to drop the classical or rock criteria. I have been enjoying Joe Stilgoe, Songs on Film Live. The track Almost Like Being in Love from Linn is great on all fronts. Another one is Tony Furtado's session from Blue Coast.
Like I said, always looking for new stuff to try!
Grateful Dead American Beauty 24/96 on HDTracks. One of my favorites.
What DAC did you get?
Thanks for your contribution. I got a Bottlehead DAC. Very, very nice. Goes well with my Bottlehead tube amplification.
As it the other way around. List music you are intimately familiar with and folks can point you to the best sounding high rez version, if there is one.
I never shop by resolution, only by title.
I like lots of music and I like to learn about more. If we're having a beer together and the topic of music came up, what would you recommend? Thanks
which did you try, 24/96 or 24/192?
24/192 also have DSD which your DAC does not do.Instead of just trying some high rez stuff, maybe you can download a trial of HQPlayer and up-sample everything.
