I just received in the mail today the new recording of Bernard Herrmann's score to the movie 'Obsession'.
It's great music (Hermann's 2nd to last score) and an amazing performance by the City of Prague Orchestra. Sound quality is fantastic.
Here's the cool part: It comes in a cd case with two discs, on a standard stereo cd and the other is a blu-ray with both 5.1 and 2 channel versions of the music.
ALL MUSIC RELEASES SHOULD DO THIS!!!!!
If you are a soundtrack fan you really need to track this down - it's a terrific disc in all ways.

Can you explain why one would want (for 2-channel) Blu-Ray rather than unformatted (?) 192/24 or DSD?
Thanks,
Jeremy
consists of a Blu-ray disc and a companion SACD disc, both first rate performances and sonics. The title is "La Voie Triomphale", a collection of 19th and 20th century wind orchestra performances, recorded by the Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces. Let's hope we see more of the same. The comparison between the two hirez protocols is irresistible.

The 2L recordings are fine, but they all originate as Pulse Density Modulated A/D conversions (a form of bit density modulation of which DSD is the 1-bit two level example of the family). 2L's original DAD AX24, and now Merging Horus A/D converters employ multi bit sigma-delta modulator front ends, from which an on-the-fly 352.8KHz 24 bit PCM conversion is performed. A comparison of the SACD (DSD) and Blu-ray (PCM) is an exercise n how well the conversion processes perform, rather than any insight into the sound quality merits of the formats.
There are no native DXD A/D converters available. The technology does not presently exist. All DXD products are conversions from original PDM to PCM conversions.
There are a number like that from 2L. But, it is not really a perfect comparison because all 2Ls are recorded in DXD, then that is converted to the 96k or 192k PCM for the BD-As and converted to DSD for the SACD. DXD is, of course, just ultra hi rez PCM. But, this tells us nothing about the differences between a native DSD recording-disc manufacturing chain vs, a PCM equivalent.
A more perfect sonic comparison would be recorded and mastered in pure DSD vs. pure PCM, although downrezzed DXD to PCM should be nearly perfect. That DSD vs. PCM distinction, by the way, is not really important to me and certainly not worth all the acrimonious arguments over the years.
It is clear to me that the 2Ls sound slightly better consistently when played in hi rez PCM, which is closest to their native recorded format. The SACDs may suffer slightly from the format conversion.
Having established that from a number of available dual disc releases, I do not see the point in a continuous stream of new releases that do the same. All it does is drive up the manufacturing and distribution costs for everyone, many of whom have already made the comparison and, like me, are no longer interested in doing more of them.
In any case, all 2Ls are fine recordings and worthy of purchase and playback in either format.
The future of music is streaming. Eventually there will be no physical medium. I am already doing this with Tidal and Classics Online. I only occasionally buy Vinyl

Yes, sad but true - unfortunately it means that elderly people who aren't tech savvy (like my mother) are excluded from enjoying such releases without some help; I make sure to organise things for her and burn a disc for her to enjoy for example pulling the soundtrack off a Blu Ray for her to enjoy an Opera. Also, streaming requires both low costs and (ideally) no data caps. Where I live, this is NOT the norm yet. In fact the streaming video services have highlighted that the networks can't really cope with the bandwidth requirements.
Personally I still enjoy purchasing a physical product even though I store the files on my server for streaming to the reference system...
Basically I still want the choice!

It's all streaming to me.
Been there and done that. After a while the novelty wears off, there are less hits and more misses. If by chance I happen to hear something fantastic, then I want to own it. When I hear something less than appealing, then I have just wasted minutes or hours of my limited time.
Now I am back to listening to my fabulous collection of vinyl, CDs and digital hi-rez files that I own. There is always room for more gems but frankly I don't have enough time to listen to all I have.
There is a small subset of people for whom streaming is perfect.
For most folks it's a fad and will wear thin sooner or later.

That remains to be seen.
Personally I have zero interest in streaming.
I don't think it's going to be viable business wise in the long term.
And what's the fun in building a music collection if you don't collect anything?

But oops, that didn't happen.
Neither will streaming.
In 10 years people will still be buying cd's and vinyl.

If I'm still here. =:-0
But I'm mostly streaming, at 16/44.1 resolution.
And it sounds OK to me.
Yes, CDs do sound a 'bit' better but there is far larger difference in SQ recording to recording than between streaming a given recording and spinning the actual CD.
Vinyl is something altogether different.
Best not go there.
I don't entirely disagree with that, but, IMHO, the number of folks buying CD's and vinyl in 10 years will be just a tiny fraction of the total market.
Another vote for;
I have zero interest in streaming.
Totally agree. This is a tremendous release. This label/orchestra has re-recorded many classic scores that greatly improve on sonics of the originals but maintain the spirit of those originals.
As has Sono Luminos.
.
Can you suggest some titles- Kal ?
Depends on what music you like.
JAZZ !
I can't help you with Jazz. Perhaps someone else can.
