The situation is confused by the fact that many (most) SACDs are either sourced from PCM masters or, even if the original recording was DSD, have been converted to PCM and back to DSD for editing purposes.Personally I do not find a huge difference these days overall between the two formats using recent very good replay machines. However most folk don't change their replay system every time there is a small technical advance. Many are still using CD/SACD players from a decade or more ago and for them SACD superiority will probably be more clear.
So, as the market is not uniform, SACD will likely continue in its current niche.
Despite my remark above about comparability I still regularly buy hybrid SACDs and always play them back in the SACD format (habit or choice?). However I don't deliberately choose SACD purchases over redbook as it is the music that opens my wallet not the silver disc.

Recording with the intention of SACD release may require more attention to detail and better overall recording quality, which is fine with me.
I stream a long of music in Lossless FLAC and inevitably recording that are released as SACD generally sound much better than the average recording, even at 16/44.1 over the internet.
I think that there is something in what you say. However I don't think that it is a consideration of SACD release that defines the recording quality. Rather it is the other way round. Most of the companies continuing to release SACDs have always been unusually careful about the quality of their recording, even prior to the availability of SACD ( e.g BIS, Linn, Chandos etc.). This compares favourably with the output of the major labels where I often feel that a culture of adequacy only pervades ( thnkfully with exceptions).
So I believe that, having made fine recordings in the first place, these indie companies are then merely looking for the best technical method of distribution to the public. Until recently this was SACD but now they are in the vanguard of offering hi-rez downloads.
