Does anybody know what could be causing my Sony scd-1 player to not total up the track listing after loading the cd into the player. And when I press the 'play' button nothing happens. Right now it won't play sacd's or redbook cd's. I'm suspecting a worn out laser or a laser realignment is needed so I'm wondering whether I can install a new laser myself though I have no experience doing this. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

The problem ended up being dust on the transport motor railings which got there are as a result of styrofoam disintegrating three years ago during delivery transit. Removed the old lube and relubricated and it worked fine over a 6 hour listening session yesterday. Thanks to all who responded.
Good news!
You dodged a bullet!

He sure did.
Nice -jumbo. Happy Listening!
Jumbo, have you considered a newer CDP that incorporates newer technology and greater levels of musicality?
I ask because as a previous owner of the SCD-1 from about 2002 - 2005, the SCD-1 may look good and appear to have superb build quality, IMO it really offered very little in the way of performance. In fact, at that time, it barely sounded any better than my Sony DVP 9000ES unit which retailed for $1200 compared to the SCD-1's $5000 price tag. And I mean barely.
For example, after several upgrades to newer CDP's, from 2006 to 2014, I settled for an Esoteric UX-3SE unit that retailed for $9k and was easily about 2 leagues more musical than the SCD-1.
But last year I replaced my Esoteric unit with the OPPO BDP-105D at $1299. By the time I took advantage of several of the OPPO's features/options was quite a significant improvement over the Esoteric.
Obviously the SCD-1 and Esoteric units both have considerably more bling bling than the OPPO but if you end up spending $500 - $1000 on repairing your antiquated SCD-1 unit you could have upgraded to something like the OPPO and potentially receive far greater listening pleasures.
Moreover, you may also be on borrowed time keeping the SCD-1 as something else may be about to go on the fritz costing you even more in repairs.
More than likely a sled issue. Do note that there are 2 separate lasers, hence my theory. Get it off to one of the US modders for a go through. Thalman does ok.
Agreed-
Bill Thalman in VA.
Another consideration;
contact Sony repair facility in Laredo TX, ask for Adrian (master tech).
Nail on the head. I would do exactly that. Send it back home to momma. They probably LFE that thing. And I'll bet the repairs will be guaranteed.
The optical pickup is obtainable. I see them on ebay occasionally. I would just recommend that you farm out the replacement to someone that knows what they are doing. It's not a "swap in swap out" procedure. I am fairly comfortable fixing things like blown caps on power supplies but I tried to replace one of these things on an old trashed DVD recorder (I didn't care because it was essentially worthless) and it was very difficult to figure out without a manual.
Maybe if you can get your hands on a Sony repair manual you can tackle it, but without it I would leave it to t a pro. That's a beautiful piece of equipment you have there, don't skimp.
You can get the laser (called an Optical pickup unit if you want to Google) over here in the UK; at least as a "recycled" unit (see URL). There may well be NOS ones available too.If you do try to fit one ensure that you use an anti-static workmat and earth (ground) yourself with a wristband connected to an earthing point(wristband usually supplied with the workmat). Static will kill the laser diode until it is installed and effectively earthed via the player. New optical units are protected until you remove a solder "tag" upon final installation.
Depending on what you need - some things (like the sled motor) are like unobtanium. Good luck in your endevours.
Welcome! jumbo-
there are some experts (on this player) here. Additionally, check out the Audiogon forums as well.
