Just curious what people think of these.
Any experiences you'd care to share?

It sound good, I can hear tape hiss, I believe SHM is another material and pressing process, supposed to give a better sound.
I have nothing to compare it to, it does indeed sound glorious!
It's my best SACD.
I prefer Aja on CD.
So, as the others say, the quality varies more w/ the mastering than the format.
I doubt that the price is justified by the expense of manufacture. They are intended for a selective audience for whom cost is not a relevant factor, whether or not the sound justifies it.
Would you rather have 3 or 4 regular SACD's or as many as 10 CD's, or one SHM? Not a tough call for me and my limited budget, and I LOVE good sound.
There might be a couple that are not available in any other hi-rez medium and so worth collecting for superior sonics or rarity. The only one I own is The Who's "Tommy." It is worth the extra cost to me because A: my name is Tommy; and B: I've been obsessed with this piece of music since its initial release on double LP; and C: it was remastered for the SHM SACD and sounds far better than the crappy SACD domestic release of a few years back. The SHM SACD sounds just like what I remember the original LP sounding like, only much better, and my hearing is pretty bad now compared to then (although my stereo is FARRRR superior), primarily from industrial exposure, age, and listening to "Tommy" (and many others) too loud through headphones.

They are much less expensive if you order them straight from Japan via CDJapan.
See link.
Buy direct. I took this advice before christmas and bought 3 Bill Evan disc (Live at Montreaux gets the most play so far) 1 Miles (forget the title) and two Fair Conventions one of which is Unhalfbricking and it's spectacular (both sound and content).
They shipped the 6 SACDs to me from Japan to SF in 3 days for $17.00. I'm a happy camper. Each disc was ~$21.00. Great experience. Putting together another order soon.
Agreed-
one cannot go wrong w/ any Bill Evans.
I have quite a few SHM SACD's and many are quite impressive.
"Quite a few" and "quite impressive." Care to elaborate? Even one favorite?

I recently purchased 4 Bill Evans titles in SHM SACD format from CD Japan. SHM SACDs are more expensive than most regular SACD releases but CD Japan offers them for quite a bit less than Amazon, Acoustic Sounds, Elusive Disc, etc. Most of them sell in the range of $35-$40 shipped from Japan. Your credit card company may stick on a small additional fee for currency conversion.
I really like the sonics from these discs and posted my impressions earlier in this forum. Search for my moniker and you will find threads in October and November concerning "Sunday at the Village Vanguard", "Interplay", "You Must Believe in Spring", and "How My Heart Sings". I have included a link to the "Sunday....." thread. They all sound really good, but, of course, you must be a big time Bill Evans fan to appreciate what you paid a premium price for. BTW, the premium may be worth it just to see the amazing packaging job CD Japan does with its merchandise.
I will venture to say that it will be a title by title comparison, much like a regular SACD. Some titles wiil be better, while others will not.
SHM-CD exists as well.
Brilliant insight.

I know...
Is a different type of plastic for the makeup of the disc itself, (and perhaps) a different way to stamp it from the master.
It is available on redbook discs too. I notice no difference in sound between SHM redbook and non SHM redbook. I have no SACD discs that SHM vs regular SACD, that are also not re-mastered: so can't compare those.
The Steely Dan AJA SHM-SACD is a pile of muddy, closed-in, crap. I prefer the redbook remaster to the SHM SACD: even though one can tell that the individual instruments sound better and are at a higher resolution.
just my opinion...
"Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, 'I still exist.'"
The Japanese have different sonic preferences and one hears different tonality in Japan.
