or is it a legitimate option that will be around for a while?

Yes, a fad.
I don't believe so. PCs, tablets, phones & media players continue to replace CD players, tuners & turntables as the primary sources of audio. DAC technology continues to evolve to the degree that even small and cost effective (USB stick) implementations can deliver staggeringly good measured performance. If it can be done in a small form factor and at a low cost, why wouldn't people continue to pair general purpose devices with a USB DAC to create a really good source?
Having said that I also reckon that these devices will become redundant in the mainstream, as direct digital class-D amps will become increasingly prevalent (negating the need for line level analog).

I have to admit it's very impressive. I'm using it from my Mac mini to a Melos headphone amp with Grado 325i cans. I took home a few full size DACs from Hegel, PS Audio, and Teac that were all in the $400-$500 range for comparison. Of course they all had optical and coax inputs as well as usb but for a strictly computer based system the Dragonfly was every bit as good as those much more expensive pieces.
I got a Dragonfly for XMAS v 1.2 and it's really good so I know I will have mine for quite a while.

I bought an HRT dSp (Android version) to try one out. Waste of money.
