Jim-
where are you as far as getting the Esoteric fixed?
still considering a Meridian model?
Follow Ups:
It's just that stereo hybrid discs in particular often don't load properly if I just press Play. So, I have to load, wait for Stop and press Play (quickly) manually. If it follows the same course as in 2006 I'll begin to hear dropouts and then I'll need to swap in one of my spare players - I also have a Denon DVD-5900 but prefer the cheap Pioneer DV-588-A - while Alternative Audio looks at the DV-50.
I just brought up Meridian because I think they've pretty much perfected the use of a 24/192 DAC with DSP. But even that doesn't guarantee good stereo sound - Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball sounds pretty bad through my brother's Meridian G06, better through the DV-50 with the single-ended 5.1 wiring and analog bass management. I suspect that Meridian has it right - that you can deliver everything Hi Rez has to offer through a 24/96 envelope and proper management of the process from the master on - with or without some tricky timing metadata. But I wouldn't bet on another Hi Rez format, disc or streaming or both. And I don't see Meridian being relevant to me personally, with a huge collection of legacy Hi Rez discs.
Both Denon and Pioneer are nice back-up players.
I just picked up an unused (display model) Oppo BDP-95. I'll be swapping that into the system while the Esoteric is getting fixed. That will give me a chance to audition the Samsung 51" 5500 as a replacement display without taking the Pro-1000HD down (Although my wife will hate having it parked in front of the fireplace!).
Anyway it should be fun auditioning the Oppo even if the wire to it's analog outputs in my system will be worth a multiple of the player. And I'll make it up to my wife by playing a couple of 3D Blu-Rays - she loves special effects.
Jim,
You may be surprised by how well the BDP- 95 competes with the audio of the DV-50, as well as being an excellent video processor. But it won't match the DV-50 for remote weight. OTOH, you can take its analog output directly to your amps and still have speaker management. Use the stereo outputs for front LR, not the surround front LR, and consult the manual for menu setup in that mode. I have Ayre C-5xeMP and Sony XA5400ES disc players in addition to a BDP-105, but if I could only have one it'd be the jack-of-all-trades 105.

As it is I'll be using one set of single-ended outputs for my ICBM analog bass management, and the balanced for "true" stereo. The Anthem AVM 20 is a pretty transparent pre-amp. If I like the Oppo enough, and the Samsung 51" 5500 passes muster as a display, I could look at going to a 105 and a new pre-pro such as the Marantz 8801. Eliminating the pre-pro is attractive but my wife listens to the radio a lot. For now I'm more or less expecting to go back to using the Esoteric after repair in my main system and using the Oppo as a Blu-Ray player with the Samsung TV and some sort of streamlined active speaker system.
IME, Anthem builds solid power amps and pre-amp/processors.
Their power amps are very robust.
