You just never know with a hard drive. Could last for many years or crash within a couple months.
The Sony player is rather odd anyway in that your music collection gets transferred from your computer via Ethernet over to the Sony. So you maintain your music on the computer.... and as we all know, it's important to keep backups.
So if the HDD in the Sony fails, your music is still available on your computer. Which is another topic entirely and has me scratching my head.
If you have a computer with all your wonderful music on it, presumably with a decent DAC and other gear, why would you transfer it all (very slowly via network I might add) to the Sony? Whenever you want new music on the Sony, you first have to put it on your computer for subsequent network transfers to the Sony. Conceptually weird and a bit inconvenient IMHO.

Sony? Could that be possible?
"Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, 'I still exist.'"
I find that when I rip a new album to my hard drive on my computer the Sony automatically downloads it to its internal harddrive. I find this convenient

That IS more convenient but....
If you already have a Computer & DAC, why would one need the Sony at all?
The only reason I can fathom is if you want the Sony player in a location other than where you have your PC/DAC setup. I tried doing that with the Sony HAP-S1 but it didn't work out to my liking. However, others seem to be enjoying the HAP-S1 or HAP-Z1ES.
Anyone still using this player? I would be interested in learning more about it? Can the player connect to the net for Hi-Rez downloads?
tried several times to reply, but nothing would post.
I hope this one works.
Weird.
It posted! But weird that it didn't a couple times.
I agree it is a strange device in some ways. I like the idea of the hard drive in the player because you don't have to deal with USB etc etc, but no digital out seems silly.
For me the idea of not using a computer appeals to me. OTOH I really find the Mac/Marantz NA11S1 to sound superior in my system than the Sony. It has more "weight and presence" to my ears
The Absolute Sounds proclamation of it being a "game changer" seems a wee bit exaggerated
I have listened to a modded HAPZ1 by Red-Wine audio (I think thats what they are called) and found it minimally different and certainly not worth the asking price of those mods. OTOH Im tempted to install a solid State hard drive in the Sony just because it can be done and would allow me to disconnect the fan in the HAPZ.
Abe I do see your logic. And I do have mixed feelings on the HAPZ. Maybe in the end will go on the market for sale. I have a hard time parting with the Marantz DAC. That genuinely seems a bargain and far superior to the PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC I have before.

I have no issues at all with how the Sony sounds. It is outstanding and I'm talking about their entry model HAP-S1 with the built-in integrated amp.
They may have made some improvements to their software. I thought the early product was a bit rough around the edges and not quite ready for prime time. That may have changed.
That would be kind of cool to put a SSD inside the Sony if it can partition and format a completely blank disk, and reinstall it's own software. Otherwise, you might need to figure out what filesystem they use or somehow clone the HDD to the new SSD.
Putting in an SSD is easily workable. The sony automatically loads up the firmware and I think you can disable the fan.
I plan to do this when I snag a 1T hard drive hopefully this Christmas season

I have Audirvana, but it doesn't work with my Korg DS DAC 100.
When I had my DSD capable Luxman DA-06 DAC I used Audirvana Plus or Pure Music. They handle DSD playback. The Luxman also came with a very basic player.
In the end, I determined that DSD wasn't necessary for my needs. I find 'hi-res' PCM to be just fine.
I converted all my DSD to PCM so I didnt have to monky with it.

I use my iPhone to control the HAPZ

thinking about the Sony, maybe Marantz is worth saving for!
I don't doubt it sounds as you described.
Do you use the 5.6 Remastering Engine?
I would use it for every type of File I have.
I got a 49' Active USB Cable to use the 24/192 DAC in my Mac Preamp, so I don't need to move the Computer.
Does the Marantz Up-Convert to 5.6, or just playback 5.6 Files?
TIA.
I leave the remastering engine on all the time

Best thing going that I've heard.
I have a 24/192 DAC in my Mac C2500, ( I use Decibel, have Audirvana, but can't get it load any Files ) and a Korg DS DAC 100, which is having software problems at the moment.
DSD 5.6 on the Korg was awesome when it was working, I can only imagine how good the
Sony Z1 must sound.
I would Only use the 5.6 Option/Upsampling, though I have some 5.6 Files I exported with Audiogate 3, that won't have to be Converted, so the Remastering Engine wouldn't even be On
for those, maybe a good thing sonically, tho I doubt I could hear the difference!
I make my own DSD Live Recordings, and would especially want the Sony for those.
