My assumption is that the Volume control on the remote is for controlling the Sony TA-A1ES integrated amp. This is supposedly the matching integrated that Sony hopes you will buy with the HAP-Z1ES.
I have the Sony TA-A1ES Integrated in my office and it sounds pretty nice.

Nice set, it does look great! Glad it works well.

I didn't own the two pieces at the same time. In fact, the Sony player that I owned was the entry model HAP-S1.
However, according to the Sony online Help Guide, when the HAP-Z1ES is connected to a Sony amp via their IR jacks, the remote supplied with the HAP-Z1ES will control Volume Up/Down, Mute, On/Off of the Sony amp.
Checking the back of my Sony TA-A1ES Integrated Amp (which happens to match the styling and physical size of the HAP-Z1ES), it does in fact have an IR mini jack in back.... looks like 1/8" audio jack.

Additional detailed information linked below from Sony's website.
1. Seems to work only with Sony amps.
2. Requires a cable from player to amp.
How last century!

Well that kinda makes sense don't you think? It's a handsomely thin Sony remote, not a bulky black plastic CableTV universal remote that houses a thousand different IR codes for a thousand different brands.
2. Requires a cable from player to amp.
Yeah, I'm not sure why they did this. At least they don't require a cable from the player to the remote. Now that would be very last century!
I can use an Apple IR remote with non-Apple devices like the Mytek and exaSound DACs, the Illusonic MCH processor and other stuff. There are BlueTooth remotes, too.
OTOH, I used the Android app to control the HAP, anyway.
