I really like the album, so when the SACD came up I violated my own rule and bought without reading reviews first.
Mistake.
The music is great, of course. It is and should be one of the best-selling albums of all times.
But the SACD is a high-resolution testament to the tape saturation present throughout the original recording.
Yeah, I still play it sometimes, for the same reason I play 8-tracks: For the music, while hating the fidelity.
What a disappointment.

Lee,
have you found a cd or sacd version that is to your liking?
The original recording is ragged. Brittle. No format is going to help it.
Lee-
which SACD version do you own?

I'm pretty happy with the Sony single layer MC version. Are people not hearing the doubled (or more) voices separately?

I have the SACD and found her voice distorted to the point of being almost unlistenable. For a while I thought I had fried one of my speakers. Too bad, sounded better in our cars years and tears ago.
Hope I have identified the disc correctly. Why would there be so many versions of this?
Howdy
I don't know but when Sony put out MC versions of some of the disks they had put out earlier I liked each one I got (both for having them in MC, but also the stereo sections were often better too.)
In particular Billie Holiday's "Lady In Satin" was much more listenable the second time around (but the liner notes were shorter and a lot more boring?)

I also have the Redbook of Carol live at the Carnegie. Her voice sometimes sounds distorted on that one also. Maybe they used bad mic's or something.
I have the original lp and never thought the "sound" was equal to the material. I have not bought any reissues as I was fearful that the master tapes were not up to par to really produce a great reissue.
There are so many master tapes out there from all the labels, deteriorating as we write and someone needs to get those transferred to 24/96, 24/192 or dsd before it is too late. For some, it is already to late.

Are you referring to the Sony stereo non-hybrid, the Sony m/c non-hybrid, or the MFSL stereo hybrid?
Regards,
Geoff
