I just purchased one and I am going to record next week Randy Napolean trio at a local jazz club. Do you recommend the microphones to be inward or outward. I may have to set rec -20. Are there any other settings I should try? I probably will use 24/192 instead of 1 bit.
Follow Ups:
Yes, -20, and keep peaks to -6, if pos. In PCM, there's a 100 db Signal to Noise Ratio setting to choose.
Crossed Mics for smaller Groups, Wide for Big Band, Orch.
Do you have a Mic Stand? Putting it on your Table, or holding it isn't the Best.
Too far back will sound distant, it takes some practice!
Recording level will be between 4.5 to maybe 6, don't be hitting 0db at all.
Should I choose the 100db S/N setting? I have a table tripod that will lift the unit about a foot off the table.
Yes, choose 100 db Signal to Noise.
There's also a dual recording feature, in case signal exceeds 0 db, it will replace that part recorded at a lower level.
In DSD, none of these features apply, so it's simpler. But I am going to try it in PCM, with those features engaged.
Good Luck!
Oldmkvi, have you tried external mics. with the Sony. I wonder what kind and does it make for a big improvement. At this point you may be better off with a true portable digital recorder like a Tascam.
The built in mics are optimized for DSD, they go up to 40,000HZ.
I have a Zoom H4N, used a Rode Stereo Mic, ( and the built-in mics ), Sony WAY Better!
The Sony is the best available for anywhere near the $.
A Sound Devices 2 Ch Recorder ( 24/96/192 ) costs $2500, and a really good Stereo Mic, or separates cost $3000 and up.
The Royer Stereo mic I want is almost $6000!
Then you have lots of stuff to transport and set up, and a Heavy Mic Stand, cables on the floor.
The Sony runs for hours on 4 AA batteries.
I love mine, but it takes some experience to find the sweet spot on Recording Level, and Placement.
Have you tried yours yet?
No, but I will this Thursday at my favorite jazz club. I also have a Korg MR-2 recorder which is not very good. I was thinking of getting Nagra's best hand held portable digital recorder, but decided on the Sony. I could find no users who had the Nagra.
How much $ for the Nagra?
Try both 24/192 and DSD , maybe one Set each.
I'd start with -20 #5, and see how it goes.
The Nagra is around 1300.00 with Stereo Mic. It can only record 24/96 like Marantz and other similar recorders.

I just listened with headphones directly to the sony recorder. The sound is good but on the warm side like a little blanket is covering the sound. The sound may be better with my computer through the USB on my high end stereo system. I used 24/192 100 s/n limit and pre recording set to on. Do you have any suggestions?
limiter is off
I haven't listened much on headphones, but the DSD Recordings,
using a Mic Stand to get it about 7 feet high, and the Optimum Recording Level, which takes some experience to work out, have been outstanding for the $ involved.
Not at all muffled.
If you recorded from a table, it was probably too low, could account for some of what you are hearing.
Try it in DSD, there are no additional settings to use, PCM has all the Options.
Korg Audio Gate software will help you to edit, add tracks, then Export them for use with a DAC.
24/96 is good, tho. Some say it's pointless to use higher Rez, but I don't agree.
