and it was well made but it was muddy or diffused in the midrange and the highs were rolled off..Basically it was setup for multi-channel surround and two channel mode didn't work well unless you modded it or used special DAC..I had a denon DCD3520 in the past and a DCD2560 and both of those were excellent.
I finally bought a Mac mini and hooked a nice DAC to it and downloaded a program so it won't extrapolate and it sounds much more analog like.
I've been spoiled by vinyl again and I listen to some streaming and mostly flac files when I listen to digital which is about 20% of the time and vinyl the rest of the time.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.

Was it's ability to be set up to play two-channel audio only. That and it keeps DSD native to the analog outputs.
Just my (adjusted for inflation) $2

It sounds like English, but I can't understand a word you're saying.
It sounds 'good enough' and I'm hard as hell to please ;)

A bit unfair on the 3910 - it can be set up to do very decent two channel from its analog o/ps and excellent MCH from its Denon Link - it sounds as though you had it set wrong, so inevitably it sounded uninteresting.

That could have been and I was wondering that as well.

The action items that I mentioned earlier in this thread which helped the 2910, I actually discovered on my 3910. It had failed to deliver up to my expectations at first. After finding these things, I applied them to other Denon players...and other brands. So, if you still have it, give it another chance. The 3910, even unmodded, can be delightful when things are in place. The analog output deliver superb SACD audio in Pure Direct (for its age). Even today, it holds well against some newer DSD players if one is careful about setup. For example, in SACD playback, it wins, no contest, against my Oppo BDP 83...but can be shamed a little by the newer BDP 105. These 2 Oppos, however, do better than the Denon 3910 in Red Book playback.
Beware of Denon Link unless you have the top Denon receivers. It is a good thing in principle. In practice, for DSD playback most Denon receivers have inferior DACs to what Denon used in the 3910. Therefore, using the analog outs in the player is usually best for SACD. Otherwise, the receiver may use inferior DACs to do the conversion to analog.
BTW, the 3910 does have a tendency to develop cold solders on the integrated chips contacts. Folks blame other areas -- usually the drive system -- and give up when the high repair bills (or long DIY hours) lead nowhere. (Best thing to do, in my case, is to keep the unit on all the time, or at least use regularly.)
