I stopped downloading Hi-Res files some time ago because I just could'nt get past the slightly "echoey sound" I was hearing in every one of the downloads. I was listening through "Up Sampling" DACs (supposedly hi res files were being played natively) that made some nice sounding Redbook rate files sound a bit "echoey" also. (Do people buy crappily recorded/produced music that needs that much "help"; that can be the only explanation I
can think of).
I like the sound of SACDs , but the CD layer played through my Consonance CD player had better micro detail & body to the sound than the SACD played through the Oppo 95 .
I found out the Consonance was using a NOS DAC chip.
I'm enjoying the DAC I use now(Metrum Hex) tremendously & I'm wondering if there may have been some element I may have been missing when I listened to Hi Res music. Could
it be that I have a high sensitivity to Upper Frequencies that most people don't have ?
The Hex has Hi-Res capabilities (No DSD capabilities unfortunately). Is there any way I can
"manipulate" Hi Res PCM to sound more agreeable to me. (Yeah, a lot of you may find this
to be a strange posting, but I thought I'd ask anyway)
Follow Ups:
I just got 2112 (Rush) DVD-A and CD pack today. I did not have time to listen to the album yet, just a quick sampling, but through my Metrum Octave, while the DVD-A (stereo) is more clear in certain aspects, the CD just sounds more musical and enjoyable to me. I's the same as when I used my Oppo BDP-83 analog outs and compared Gaucho DVD-A to CD - I always prefer the CD.
On a separate note, I have concluded lately that those of us who prefer NOS DACs are more sensitive to something in the high frequencies, since so many people do not seem to notice. I read great reviews of DACs that I cannot stand. I think this is why more people are not raving about the Metrums.
As far as a "test" of sensitivity, I used to hear the 19kHz (or whatever frequency) CRT TVs through walls in my early decades of life, when nobody else seemed to hear them. I now have some loud-noise-induced tinnitus masking some of those ~20kHz frequencies, but something in my ears is still sensitive to high-frequency artifacts (I never hear such artifacts in live music).
Wow, This is great it means there are at least 2 of us that think a lot of the Oversampling
DACs we've heard or tried sounded pretty much the same, "all wrong". It seems to me these
DACs are not making it easier to hear more detail , they are creating their own artifacts that seem to "ride above the music"
You're right though . Either people are'nt bothered by these artifacts or they're not willing to
admit it. To narrow things further these artifacts really only affect the sound that un amplified
instruments should sound like in the space they are being played.
The Metrums do a better job with "Acoustc Music" then any DAC that I've heard. If you like
the Octave ,you have hear how the Hex presents the sound. I find that the comments made
in the 6 Moons review of the Hex to be pretty much spot on. Someone at Metrum Acoustics
has a pretty attentive aural memory when it comes to recreating acoustically based music.
