Played around with one of these yesterday and I think it's the coolest thing I've ever seen in the the audio world! Once I started thinking what it is....instead of what it isn't...the switch in my head went on. It's not a DAC, it's not music streamer, and its not a disc player....but it can replace all three. I'm going to oversimplify this and call it a giant iPod that loads itself from your computer and passes a hi-Rez signal to your preamp. Once your music is loaded...again virtually automatically...you no longer need to have a computer connected or even powered on. Every type of file that I heard sounded great, and it was so easy to use. I won't get into all the specs, look them up if you want to, but I will say how impressed I am with its looks/build/use and most importantly sound.
Currently I have all of my CDs on a Mac mini using a Dragonfly DAC. Biggest drawback is having to keep the computer on and connected to the system. The Sony will be an independent unit once loaded, skipping the whole hard drive/DAC/computer source and all the required cables and power cords. At $2k it's not cheap, but it sounds ever bit as good as the NAD M51 DAC at the same price but has the added benefit of being its own source. I'm going to find the money for it.
At $2K it is cheap, UK price is £2K . Have you heard the matching TA-A1ESamp. ?
I'm also not looking for any amplifier or preamp stage so it wasn't for me. It did sound very nice with the Sony two-ways it was connected to. I'd say that would make a great bedroom/office system.
Reviews from both Hi-Fi News & by Andrew Everard Words & Music indicate the TA-A1ES amplifier is capable of far more than merely being used in a bedroom/office system. I will find out for myself shortly as I am getting the new Sony amp on a 30 Day trial later today. My main concerns are the lack of a HT by pass & the FET input given high distortion at HF as measured by Paul Miller furthermore IMO it should be available in Black not silver.
I thought you meant the HAP-S1. I have not heard nor seen the TA-A1ES amp.
And it has no facility for handling multi-channel files. Other than those issues, it looks like a nice piece...

I miss the modders of the late 1990's into the mid-2000's as well.
Hopefully, the (very) few that are left will take interest in trying to mod this player...
What is the point of modifying this player ?. Would like to know how to separate the pre from the power on the matching TA-1AES amplfier that requires a HT pass through.
Is it possible to separate the the pre from the power ,to just use the power amp only ?
Would like a better view... Best I could find...
Better looking photo...
Double transformers...
any questions - should go to the person (vinni rossi) who started the link at audiocircle
