My plan.... I'm going to wait one year for all the 'dsd download' nonsense to fizzle out and then buy the best 16/44 DAC I can find under two grand.

You can find outstanding DACs today for well under two grand.
I absolutely love the sound of my PS Audio NuWave DAC ($1000 MSRP) playing 16/44 material and it also handles higher resolution files, but not DSD. For standard PCM playback I set it to native, non-upsampling mode and it sounds great!
Why wait for the "DSD download nonsense' to fizzle out? That niche should have no influence over your choices and decision to buy a great basic DAC today. Several exist at reasonable prices.
Good luck!
you should consider:
Scott Nixon Tube DAC with the upgraded PS (surprisingly good for the $)and
Audio Note NOS DACs.
These are among the best I have heard on 16/44.
There are many I have never heard.
Metrum has some choices in between those also. I too, have given up on getting great sound from high-resolution on "budget" DACs and found what I wanted from mere CDs w/ a good NOS multibit DAC.
not nonsence, but badly overpriced
they all upsample and most sound pretty good. my whole rbcd collection became more valuable to me after i played my first one on my sony ns500v!
...regards...tr
If you want great redbook cd playback try any of the Audio Note transports and dacs. Even there entry level stuff uses the same nos dac

Thanks! for sharing Alan, et al.
The Audio Note, Audia Flight and Metronome CD spinners are on my short-list to demo, as well as the newest Parasound CD player.
I really liked the Sony 5400 ES and Esoteric DV-50/60 for SACD duty...so far...
Agreed, I'm getting one and selling my current unit. I've wanted one for some time and finally decided to go for it. I think I'm going 4.1 w/c-cores

I built the 4.1LE a year ago with the triple C-cores, and it sounds very, very nice. I would be interested to hear their 2.1 and 3.1 to see how much of the family sound maintains.
You will love it. I must say I originally used my Sony 5400 as a transport but picked up a used Audio Note transport and it made a significant difference in sound.
Alan
I know I will like it and am excited about it. I currently stream but would consider a transport again and will certainly try my current working transport (I have a dead Philips too) I've been eyeballing the Audio Note for a few years and just love what it does and how it does it.
There's a 2.1B assembled for sale in the Asylum Trader now. The 4.1 is 2.5V @13 ohms! Those double C's are so nice too! Saving the $$, will happen perhaps by summer. I don't debt for toys anymore.

I keep looking for an SACD-capable machine that will sound as good as my tubed Raysonic 128 on CDs and have had zero luck -- up until a couple weeks ago -- in finding one. That included stints with your machine (not even close), the Sony XA777ES and the Oppo BDP-83SE.I finally found the Holy Grail (for me) in the Oppo 105, which sounds as good -- no better, but as good -- as the Raysonic. So I've sent the Oppo to ModWright for their tube mod and am hoping for the best, if only because the Raysonic is now an orphan and I'd really rather deal with one machine than two.

Not a bad plan...but 24 bit PCM is not nonsense and there are clearly better than CD 96 and 192 downloads. Examples..The Doors, Grateful Dead, America, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis Catalogs. And many others.
