The problem you describe is not inherent in the DSD-PCM conversion process. I have heard many systems, including my own, that do this completely without the problem you describe. I realize that the pro-pure DSD belief is very strong in some circles, but elimination of this issue is not one of the alleged benefits of that approach. I think you need to look at your hardware or hookup for some other electronic fault.

All my previous experience would say that you are absolutely correct. The "problem" is that I have eliminated most trivial explanations for what I have observed. However, I am certainly not insisting that the only possible explanation lies somewhere in the difference between the two conversion processes (DSD to PCM vs DSD). I have no dog in that fight. In fact, I am now not even sure that the Ayre (and Pioneer) do indeed convert DSD to PCM. I am not allowed to withdraw my original post, but no further response is necessary. I will report back after I try a few more experiments tonight. I am tending to think this has nothing to do with the conversion process, like you.

Are you saying that swapping channels on your amplifier and simultaneously swapping channels on the speaker wire moves the problem to the other speaker?

No swapping of any cables has resulted in moving the problem from R to L. Thus the problem must lie with the R channel amplifier. (One cannot switch the "cables" between amps and speakers, because there IS no cable; the amps are directly connected to the stators and diaphragm. I would have to disassemble the two speaker/amplifier combinations and swap the whole amplifier from R to L, and vice-versa, an onerous task. I have not tried that, but the evidence is sufficient to exculpate the CDPs.)
