I recently purchased a Schiit Bifrost (with the “uber" analog option) and have been amazed at how much better my RBCDs sound now. With my modified Sony SCD-777ES acting as a transport, my system has literally been transformed, at least with RBCDs, which account for the vast majority of my collection. It’s also very easy to do A/B comparisons, as, of course, both the Sony and Bifrost are connected to my preamp, and the Sony still outputs the RBCD signal via its analog outs. The sonic differences are immediately apparent: it sounds OK enough via the Sony, but with the Bifrost, the soundstage opens up dramatically and there is more warmth to the sound. I’m still in the process of breaking in the unit (I understand it benefits from that), but I’m very pleased with it so far. I’ve not made a comparison between the CD and DSD layers of a hybrid disc, but I suspect the Sony might be getting a little long in the tooth at this point, so a comparison might not be completely fair….

I think my Sony SCD 775CE fits the 2nd rate category, anyway, it's pretty old. My Schiit Bifrost, also an Uber, ought to beat it and does.
I agree that the Bifrost Uber is an excellent DAC at several times its modest price.
