Looks like Sony is throwing it's weight behind hi-rez music files and has a stand alone 1TB new product you can buy now. Here's an article on hi-rez that introduces the product, provides sites to buy hi-rez tracks, comments from those in the music biz and even breaks things down for us new to hi-rez.

I saw and listened to the Sony HAP-Z1ES at CES and it was phenomenal! Compressed MP3s are for the masses that don't care about sound quality. If you want true audiophile quality content, DSD is the way to go. It sounded as if you were directly connected to the sound board during the master recording.
I have a Mytek stereo 192 dsd dac and a dozen or so DSD downloads. My vinyl playback is still better. Not sold at all on HiRez.

What about Hi-Rez don't you like?

It is not that I don't like it. It is just a gamble at a high cost. I have had quite a few friends in our audio club that just feel redbook playback on my Audio Note setup is more musically pleasing then high rez over the Mytek . Remember the Mytek is $1600 while the Audio Note combo is $12000. I just can't seem to sit back and just enjoy HiRez where vinyl and redbook can just be relaxing while DSD especially is over detailed.

They talked some in the article and admit not all would be interested in higher resolution. Potentially though this could be the best source ever available, imagine a digital download of the master tape. And when trying to engage the general public's interest there should be a very noticeable difference between mp3 and a hi-rez file in sound quality.
A Stereophile article showed a couple other Sony hi-rez products for less money. I have a SACD player, bought my first SACD in 2013 but do not stream at this point.
Sony will also have a Download Site of their own, according to Audiophile Audition.
I don't know when, tho.
The Sony people and the Fox news guy are dreaming.
Ordinary listeners are not interested in Hi Rez, MP 3 is plenty good enough for them. And to make the comparison with Mc Donald and foie gras is another joke.
Who can afford foie gras?? except a few gourmets which are the equivalent to audiophiles.
Hi rez downloads like SACD is and will only attract a small number of listeners.
Sony is well known for changing directions constantly, they should have supported SACD which is an excellent product even in 2 channels only.
The Sony guy at RMAF said they believe that kids do want higher resolution. I have a feeling we will be seeing a hirez Walkman in the future

My daughter had a bunch of her friends over, I lit up my system and watched jaws drop. One guy with all the latest gadgets and Beats 'phones just blurted out "I spent all that money and now it sounds like CRAP!"
For a lot of these kids, it's like crack - one hit of hi-rez, and they're hooked. But others can't hear or don't care.
There is hope.
