I did a shootout with 5 or 6 A-D DSD converters. The files are still available.
The Tascam didn't fare very well. Actually more people preferred the sound of the Korg over the Tascam.
As expected, most preferred the sound of the Horus and Grimm overall.
Follow Ups:
The discontinued Korg was $1800 and wasn't it modified?
Yeah, I think I paid about $1400 for it and it was modified by a couple of people.
As Ric noted, the Tascam 1000HD will record in both formats; PCM and DSD.
Folks have to realize Tascam built this unit to a price point. Does it blow away the high dollar converters? Of course not, but it does offer you a reasonably inexpensive means to get into high rez recording and playback, and allow one to lay down high resolution DSD or PCM tracks.
I have a pair of the Tascam 1000HD's and do live to 2 track hi rez recording with them. I started out using the Tascam's internal converters and clock, which are OK but not great. AFter about a year, on one setup, I added an Apogee Roesetta converter to handle the A to D and D to A tasks (will do PCM only), then later added an Antelope audio Atomic Master clock which creates the clocking signal for both the recorder and the A to D converter. HUGE improvement over using the stock tascam internals, but it should be for the price delta. The importance of a good clock can not be overstated. 24/96 with the clock sounds better than 24/192 without the clock.
On the other Tascam, I use the new Mytek A to D, which will also do the conversion to record and playback DSD files.
No compression or signal alterations are used prior to conversion. I feed the analog output from the Avalon Mic Pres directly into the converter. Have had others tell me they are they are among the most natural digital recordings they have heard.
Happy listening (and recording).
