Tascam has a newer recorder that records directly to SDHC cards (DA-3000). Suppose to sound mucho better than older Tascams or even Korgs. Will record and play back all PCM and even single and double speed DSD. Only $1000. I plan to mod them for even better sound.

But perhaps not so great when compared to the best available DSD converters. Listen for yourself.

Yes, of course, what can you expect for $1000 including mono DACs, recording capability and headphone out?..that is why it needs mods. The Grimm ADC costs thousands of dollars and is only an ADC.Tascam uses ordinary op amps and pots on input. Change this out for zero feedback buffers driving amorphous core trannies and you will have mucho better sound. Other mods....damping, shielding, corking, WA Quantum chips, Black Discus, better caps, wire, power supply parts, low impedance shunt regs, better fuses, etc. etc. could bring this thing up with the big boys and maybe beyond.
