I have a BDP-105 and since the last firmware update I've had lots of trouble booting up the machine. when I power up it hangs up in the "hello" screen and none of the controls work. I have to power cycle the machine several times to get it to work. I called Oppo and was told my HDMI cable was causing the problem. This is the HDMI cable they provided yet they told me to purchase another one. I'm curious if anyone else has had this problem and what resolution you found. I personally was a little disappointed in their response.

IMO Oppo is very overated. I had non stop problems with an earlier model which Oppo Support could not fix. Due to rave reviews I tried the Oppo 103 via HDMI into a Sony AVR DA5400ES (UK version) and found the BD sound inferior to my Sony BDP1000ES/760, I also prefer Sony's more natural picture, took the Oppo back for a refund.

Sidenote:
any of you guys using an older Oppo, like a BDP-83/83SE ?
I have a BDP-83SE. It's been flawless, and I was recently amazed to find out how good it sounded once I subjected it to the "full Pierre (Sprey)." That is, put large brass spikes/points under it, then a maple platform under that, than some of those cork/rubber thingies under that. Thought I had a new piece of gear. No kidding.
My Oppo BDP-83 has been put through hell by (Oppo's) firmware updates.
It worked just fine before applying any updates (apart from faint inter-track clicks).
After innumerable updates the clicks are gone but the loader works only 50% of the time and the player cannot find the SACD layer on about 30% of SACD discs.
I would recommend users avoid using the firmware updates.
Oppo knows this. The loader on the 95 and newer machines is a different mechanism (Sony) and is extremely reliable. I have had at least 3 of my customers have loaders that failed on their 83s. None have failed on the 95s and 105s. Oppo will generally replace a defective loader in the 83s for free. And this is way out of warrantee. Oppo is a great company. They could not have known the loader would give them such problems after a few years. Please call Oppo and have your loader (transport) replaced. Software problems are another matter.
I have done all the Oppo updates on a number of machines and none have deteriorated. I suggest there might be another culprit.
I have been talking about my problems with Oppo firmware since I installed the first one a few years ago and it seems like everytime I bring these issues up, you jump in with same comments, insinuating that the Oppo firmware is not problematic.
Do you work for the company or own stock in it? You seem mighty defensive when these issues are discussed (Oppo itself, if you contact them, freely admit that there have been many problems with previous firmware updates).
Just because you have never had a problem does not mean that many other Oppo users have not had problems with the firmware.
The Oppo user forums are full of users reporting problems with the firmware. You have been lucky but the OP, myself and hundreds of other Oppo users (judging by the forums) have not been so lucky.
I had no idea of your history prior to this post and, if I have responded to you before, I have no recollection of it.
However, if you have been having this problem consistently over a long span with multiple updates, it seems to me that the common component is your particular player.
So, I am not trying to deflect your complaint because the competence of the player is certainly their responsibility. What about having them repair it?
After so many issues with the Oppo, I think a refund might be the best option.

I think that says it all. Something in your sample (and perhaps others) is buggy and exacerbated by successive updates. By now, I would have sent it to Oppo for repair/replacement or tossed it since it seems unreasonable to expect any satisfaction by continuing to update it. There's nothing anyone here can do for it.
P.S.: I recalled one of your referenced threads but, frankly, I do not remember the names associated with most threads. Chalk it up to the sheer volume of threads or my age.
The first firmware upgrade caused the players "bugginess" and yes, you are right, its been downhill ever since. Is it not fair to conclude based on what people are reporting (regarding firmware) that some of these players are reacting badly to the updates?

I recently began having trouble with my BDP-83SE drive not opening. This didn't seem tied to any firmware update, but it's apparently a known problem with some of these units when there's not a disc in the tray. I contacted Oppo to see if I could buy a new drive for it. Instead, they offered to repair my long out of warranty player free of charge! All I had to pay was shipping to them - they even covered the return shipping. I got the player back today (it was only in their shop from Fri to Mon), and it seems to work fine. This is outstanding customer service from Oppo - I know where my next blue ray player is coming from.
It is hard to draw any statistical inferences from Internet postings but, even if you were unique, you deserve a resolution.
Those links to earlier threads pretty much make Kal's point.
Your problems are likely NOT the fault of firmware upgrades.
...and how would you know that?
The player worked fine before I applied firmware to it.
I date each and every one of my problems to a firmware upgrade. Numerous other users (including the OP have reported the same).
OK, well, another time, then…
Mine has a couple of times stalled when playing a non cd or SACD. IT never did it before. I'll report if this happens again.

Try here... Looking at some of posts on the last firmware update.
Hope you find help...
Thanks!
My 105 is about 2 weeks old. Never had a problem with original firmware. 2 days ago updated firmware and no problems. Had some strange behavior tonight. Had SACD playing and decided to play DVD-a next, so I turned on the monitor. The Oppo started cutting in and out while the SACD was playing. Once the monitor stabilized all was OK. Using a 12ft HDMI cable ( average quality as screen is only for navigation). Always turn screen on 1st, so I don't know if it would have happened with original firmware. I will definetly turn monitor on first in the future.
Good luck

Mine has done that for a year when the display is turned on, its the hdmi hand shakes.
