A new Sony model continues the tradition of weighing less than the previous model so durability and reliability will become an issue over time. Look also at the Sony Blu-ray players for example.

Gross weight of a disc player does not necessarily equate to better sound. You need to be more specific about where that weight is weightier and why that increased weight means longer part life and/or improved sound. Advances in material development/implementation have and are trumping part weight as principle criteria for durability. I have an old Victor phonograph from early days of sound and its a lead weight. Does that mean it was more reliable or sounded better than lightweight players?
At Accuphase the weight of their players increases with the build quality and durability. Accuphase, what else? The Sony SCD-XA5400ES SACD player, weight 10.2 kg (22.5 lbs).DP-400 CD player, 13.6 kg (30.0 lbs)
DP-510 CD player, 17.8 kg (39.2 lbs)
DP-600 SACD player, 18.5 kg (40.8 lbs)
DP-700 SACD player, 27.0 kg (59.5 lbs)
DP-900 SACD Transport, 30.0 kg (66.14 lbs)
DP-901 Digital Processor, 23.4 kg (51.59 lbs)Note from Accuphase on modifications:
Any modifications to Accuphase equipment other than what Accuphase allows, shall put your unit out of warranty. The consequent risks that might arise from the modifications are yours.

Agreed-
the gross weight of any CD player says volumes about its build quality, wether it is an all aluminum or all copper chassis.
