All I read about are folks asking others on this forum about the SHM SACDS of SF and Exiles.......well guys, time has moved on and there must be some opinions of these two releases. You can compare other versions........but please be sure to come back to these new Japanese issues, because those discs are what are available ......and they cost a fortune!!!
Some folks think the discs overly bright ??
please info that can help me out would be greatly appreciated!

These Stones SHM-SACDs (non ABKCO) are pure transfers from the original master tapes. These are not "re-mastered" in any way, just straight transfers from the original tapes into an DSD converter.
Bright?? If you think these sound bright, it's either something wrong with your system, or your ears.
Not EQ-bright, but has a lot of bandwidth energy. Some people mix up these two things.
I like these discs.
Thank's for the good news! Would you have any comment on Exiles or Dire Straight's Love over gold? I do have their 1st album and I think it sounds incredible......ditto for Rumors.
The only other rock SACD I have is Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow.....way OOP and selling on Ebay for $100 ....ouch!!

I just shot out "Wild Horses" on the new SHM SACD against the same tune on the 2002 ABKCO "Hot Rocks 1964-1971" SACD. No contest: Mick's vocal is lost in the background on the Japanese version and the mix sounds like a stadium venue rather than a studio.
And for sixty bucks we should get a working zipper on the album jacket.
Notwithstanding all this, what option is there other than vinyl?
There is the reel at 7 1/2 ips... It sounds pretty good actually.

Well, I ordered it anyway. Most of Hot Rocks consist of their UK Decca recordings that have always been superior recordings when compared to their Atlantic/Virgin catalogue. Somehow, I question the validity of your opinion. Sticky fingers is one of the truly great rock albums of all times and I find it hard to believe that the recording is going to sound as if it was taken from a stadium.
Yes, vinyl is the ultimate......but I don't have a TT any longer, so my 4,000 Ls don't do me much good :(

Tom B: The original un-EQ'd master tapes for "Exile" are lost/damaged. So the tapes that has been used for the last years CD/Lp releases are tapes that is slightly EQ'ed.
But the SHM-SACD sounds good!
SHM-SACD of Love Over Gold is the second best Dire Straits transfer, after Dire Straits S/T. It's good!
Thank's for the info bro !!

These are not the world's greatest recordings by any stretch. They always sounded murky and bottom-heavy. Having said that I was pleasantly surprised with the SHM SACDs. The fact that you say some are now claiming the SACDs are too bright is a tremendous clue that the veil that always made previous versions too dark has finally been lifted. Similar things can be said about the classic Sab albums now available on SHM SACD. Too bright? I would say they're more balanced/linear. As for whether it's worth the steep cost to order these imports, it depends how much you like them. Previously released Stones SACDs like Beggars Banquet sounded better, but those ABKCOs are now OOP and the SHM SACDs now seem cheap by comparison. When they go OOP, they'll cost a fortune. .
