MDT is offering special preorder prices for the EMI SACDs that are being released in the UK. These discs are a selection of the Japanese issues, which are very pricey. I placed an order to test the waters.
Keep in mind that some of these are mono recordings, and none are surround. I have always had excellent service from MDT, and mailing costs are very reasonable.
Follow Ups:
I've always had great service from MDT as well, and I received their e-mail announcing this new series a few days ago. I'm honestly very surprised by this move on EMI's part, as they've resisted SACD for so long, and now they're doing these releases at a time when the classical CD market (and SACD market) is at a pretty low point. I will definitely support their efforts and try a few titles.
One nagging question I have is whether the masters used for these releases are the same as what was used for the Japanese releases. I know that, in many cases, EMI Japan does their own remastering of back-catalog material for reissue on CD, which explains why their CDs frequently sound different (and in many cases, better) than their European/US equivalents. I don't know whether this is the case with EMI's SACDs, however. EMI's descriptive info about their remastering process would seem to indicate that all the remastering was done at Abbey Road Studios in London, but did EMI Japan use these same remasterings? Just curious...
In any case, I'm really looking forward to the new (European) releases, especially at the bargain prices!

All analog to digital transfers were done in the UK from what was considered the best source, either the original master tape or 78 rpm master disc for earlier recordings. There's a long discussion of this on the SA-CD.net forum. The only difference will be where the discs are pressed.
I'm not sure whether the stereo source is used for all recordings where both mono and stereo versions exist. The discussion was a bit vague, suggesting that sometimes the stereo version was not the "best" alternative, for example, which might be the case in the Gieseking/Schwarzkopf Mozart song recital. This is not on the UK list yet, and the Japanese issues don't indicate stereo or mono, at least not on the covers. It was issued in stereo on 2-track tape in 1955 and on a stereo LP near the end of the LP era.
First Hand Records is reissuing on CDs some early EMI stereo recordings. Their latest is a stereo recording from 1954, even though EMI lists its first stereo commercial recording as from early 1955, although it started experimental stereo recording earlier. Link below.
Do you think that these prices are only valid for pre-order and that they will go up later?
At around 10$ a disc they are true bargain, even the packaging looks amazing.
Both MDT and Presto usually offer new titles at a reduced price of £1-2 on preorders, and then the price goes to the regular level. Best to buy now.
My hope is that the full line of Japanese releases will be available from the UK. We can encourage this by buying now to show EMI that the demand is there.
I spoke to MDT the pricing will stay the same after the official release date.
And Presto Classical also has preorder prices - I ordered the Elgar and Beethoven discs today (4 SACDs) for a total of $44.70 including shipping. In these days of exorbitant SHM EMI reissue prices, these are to be celebrated. I know I'M excited! (MCh listeners probably not so much). The DuPre performance of the Elgar Concerto belongs in every collection
Thanks a million! I have been wanting to get my paws on the JDP Elgar Cello concerto, but the Japanese SACDs are just too expensive.
