I've read positive reviews of Accardo and of Fone', but two reviewers on sa-cd.net wrote that the violin tone on this sacd was harsh and glassy. A reviewer on Audio Audition described the sound as just short of annoying. I suppose that those reviews should be enough to keep me away, but I was wondering if anyone else could comment on this disc? Thanks.

I would be careful of judging just by somebodys comment, how many of you, have actually heard a strad really in the same room? they can sound pretty raw and rough, especially if recorded closely, and Accardo sometimes does sound like that, in the most positive characteristic manner.
Although I never quite liked his Paganini. I prefer Ricci, Tedi Papavrami is one of the newer interpreters of this music I like! Or Kremers Barracuda variations, and then of course go and listen to the old recordings of Vasha Prihoda!!
but then, i like myself as well, so I am biased to the core ;-)

I haven't heard all the recorded renditions of the Caprices, but, with a booklet cover like this, this newest release has GOT to be good. :-)
I donno what to say, since I cannot show my bare shoulders, or at least would not have the same effect.
But try and listen to Zehetmair, completely different world again..

She won the 2007 Tchaikovsky competition and plays on the 1727 Strad that once belonged to Joseph Joachim.
There are two Zehetmair recordings, one for Teldec about 15 or so years ago, and a new on on ECM. The former is excellent; I haven't heard the later one yet.
Rabin is still my favorite.
Used to have his Sibelius Concerto with Masur and the LGO. I also have a couple of, ahem, "private" DVD-Audios of a couple of his NY performances.I'll try to get a copy of the Caprices and give it a listen.
