I'd like to hear some suggestions for a good Blu Ray, DVD, SACD and CD player. I'm pretty new in this hunt but I's like it to be low profile like the OPPOs (4" at the most)and skewed more toward audio. I have a DAC so a really bomb proof and silent transport would be appreciated. Bang for the buck is paramount. Say, under $400 used if that is at all possible....
AFIK, the only available choices right now are the Oppo ($500), Denon ($4,500) and the Marantz ($6,000). There will be a new Cambridge shortly, that appears to be a modded Oppo, but for more $, and a Lexicon ($3,500), which is clearly just a modded Oppo. There is nothing under $500 that I am aware of that also plays SACD. (I think Sony Playstations no longer support SACD.)
Oppo is clearly the one and only choice. I own one and it does not disappoint in any way - a breakthrough for the money. Video performance is as good as the Denon, based on comparative reviews, or probably the Marantz also. It's A+ rated by Stereophile via its HDMI output. All that the Denon and Marantz appear to offer is somewhat better analog audio performance, though the Oppo is no slouch. Oppo's service and tech support are second to none.
Judging from the BDP-83 thread at AVS, all the outstanding minor issues with the machine appear to have been fixed.
If I were you, I'd go with the Oppo (if you can find one used), based on all the good comments here.
The Oppo looks like the ticket.
