illiterate when it comes to classical. All I know is the stuff we used to get high to, which we called "Heavy Metal Classical". Stravinsky Firebird off th Yessongs LP , Rite, Petrouchka, Muss- Pictures at an Exhibition (because of ELP), Dvorak 9th (theme music for the Spasky Fischer match). That's the whole thing, and now Rocky 3 (Rachmanioffs 3rd Piano Concerto). Sorry, but I came from poverty. Now King Crimson.....
mainly Emerson, Lake and Palmer's versions of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Prokofiev's Dance of the Evil God and Pagan Monsters from the Scythian Suite. When I purchased the original orchestral versions of those I was in musical heaven.
I owe a huge debt to ELP for helping me discover Classical music which until then I thought was all academically boring music such as that composed by Mozart and other composers whose music makes me want to cringe. But with no guidance or at the worst the wrong guidance from the Classical musical established recommending even more academically boring classical music. Their excuse is I have to "learn to like" these boring classical works. I have tried for decades to learn to like the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, and other so-called greats. I have learned if I don't love a piece on the first hearing I will never like it, never! From the very first note I loved The Rite of Spring, Petrouchka, The Firebird, Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain, Scythian Suite, and tons of others I discovered the hard way by buying blindly. Now we have the Internet and streaming audio samples so no one longer needs to buy blindly. I have always hated the music played on Classical radio stations and I still do!
After nearly thirty years of purchasing Classical music haphazard I now have a strategy I look for what I call "Power" Classical orchestral music and I listen to streaming audio samples before buying. And now that I have nearly every format under the sun I no longer feel the need to buy a classical work just because it is on SACD.
I've put together a list "The Basic Power Orchestral Repertoire or Classical music for folks who don’t like Classical music" This is the perfect tool for additional exploration. I love all kinds of music from Jazz, Blues, Rock to World music but I dislike most traditional classical music with a purple passion however Power classical music is my absolute favorite music above all others.

...and no apologies necessary. Although I was exposed to classical early ( and through college), I mostly listened to rock and was more familiar w/ the warhorses due to the same progressive crossovers you mentioned.
It's only with advancing age, and exposure to the higher fidelity (compared to CD, natch) of SACD that I've really begun to listen to a lot of classical in the last 5 years or so.
And pssst: the 2 versions of Concerto I mentioned are the only recordings of Bartok I own (so far). If you like Bartok, you might also enjoy the symphonies of Shostakovich - huge, brash, modern, and cynical.
Enjoy,
Doug

especially since the sentencing discrepancy between crack and powder has been rightfully narrowed. And you have chosen a good one in the Bartok. Because you have brought it up I will almost certainly pull out this evening one of the many (well several on SACD) versions that I have. Thanks.
