Roughly what do they say about the audio performance (SACD and redbook) of Oppo 970? The January 07 issue is no longer on the newstand. Thanks!

By that I mean the Oppo doesn't seem to do anything that makes the sound sound bad. Music sounds very nice on it, well-balanced over the entire frequency range without any obvious distortions or graniness. However, as I said in some comments a few months ago, its leaves out or smooths over the nuances of the sound, the things that give the real texture to it. I bought a Sony ESD 2000ES for a bit more ($175) on a close out, and it is clearly superior. It only takes a minute of listening to each to realize what is missing from the Oppo. That said, the Oppo can certainly provide a great deal of pleasureable listening for the price. I am only talking about SACD here, as I have never even listened to CDs on it. Also, MCH SACD isounds very convincing on the Oppo, which for me is one of the chief attractions of SACDs.Joe
TAS is slightly more favourable than Christine's review below. I have to agree completely with Christine on this. I've had one for about a week now and the video quality is excellent. As one would expect it is nowhere near the sound quality of my SCD777es with level 5 mod.
