Whatever the case, perhaps there are a number of patents that could be associated with the "next thing" -- plug-in chips, memory sticks, micro-marbles (joke)...whatever they come up with. But, there is also the coolest patents of all. Namely, the patents around the science of working in the digital domain to get as close as physically possible to the SOURCE, and this would probably center around complicated code algorithms, recording technologies and, ultimately, the ability to "prove" that the most subtle of improvements is, indeed, "patentable". The race to reality...
