You could have bought these for $9.09 a pop, so $12 each is not particularly great. That's list price.>> (1) Hybrids are pretty new, right? I mean, like less than a year old or so? <<
No, they've been produced since the introduction of SACD more than five years ago. The 2nd SACD I ever bought was the MFSL Duke Ellington hybrid. Hybrids existed from the beginning. In fact Sony was one of the only labels not producing hybrids.
>> (2) I read a lot of "music" press, but not a lot of "audio" press. I don't think that the flexibility and future-proof element of Hybrids is being trumpeted adequately to music-philes. Anyone agree? <<
The only thing that will get music lovers on board is lots of music available on hybrid. Writing about it doesn't cut it. You knew about hybrids but did not dive in until you saw titles that interested you at a price that was comparable to CDs. Voting with your money is what counts.
>> (3) I just don't get the following situation...I just paid $12 apiece for some newly issued SACD Hybrids, yet MANY SACDs are out there in the $25-30 price range. Something's gotta give? <<
I've always said that in the long run there is no reason SACD would be a more expensive technology than CD. Prices are starting to reflect the truth of that after only about five years. Many audiophile CDs like XRCDs are in the range of $25-$30.

The key point there being: "Prices are STARTING to reflect the truth of that after only about five years. Many audiophile CDs like XRCDs are in the range of $25-$30."I don't pay the premium for "audiophile CDs", especially knowing that "yesterday's premium audiophile remastering" is generally outperformed by the current mid-price reissues. I would not (and was always put off) by the high priceing.
It will be interesting to see how well the "early pioneers" of SACD (i.e., the boutique labels) fare once (and if) the "majors" get truly serious about the Hybrid format. In other words, can the tiny labels AFFORD to record and produce SACDs only to charge $10 apiece?

Well, any new technology is expensive. As it gets older, prices come down. That has nothing to do with SACD. It has to do with recovering costs of R&D, manufacturing, and marketing. I now get SACDs for less than I paid for CDs during the early 90s. If you adjust for inflation, that is a remarkable deal. Higher quality, advanced technology at a lower pricepoint.Boutique labels always charge a premium, regardless of the format. If you buy LPs, CDs or SACDs from Analogue Productions or MFSL, you're going to pay more. That has nothing to do with SACD.

Yep, something has GOT to give. The $25 and up price of many SACD's has made me look elsewhere for music. I enjoy SACD's. But there is NO WAY I am going to pay prices like that. I haven't bought an SACD for close to 6 months but have bought more redbook CD's than I can count. If Sony wants to make their new format work, they are going to have to do something to promote the god damn thing. Fewer people than ever are actually paying for music. I wont download it, I will pay for it, but not at these insane prices.
