About a week before Christmas, my order arrived:
Diana Krall – When I Look in Your Eyes
Diana Krall – Look of Love
David Bowie – Heathen
Bill Evans – Waltz for Debby
Based on my listening thus far, I am very impressed with Waltz for Debby and Heathen.
WFD sounds significantly better than the Riverside K2 Remaster it replaced. Very impressive.
Heathen is also a good recording, and aside from being Bowie’s best work in some time, the sound quality on the SACD is extremely good (I don’t have the CD to compare it to though).
The Krall disks are a different story. I was looking forward to When I Look in Your Eyes since the CD version was included on Harry Pearson’s Super CD list (as an aside, I purchased the Gladiator Soundtrack based on both its high rating on the list and the fact that I very much like the movie – very impressive). However, on my system, the SACD sounds veiled, as if someone has thrown a blanket over the piano and other instruments. Far less than impressive. As for Look of Love, I haven’t spent much time listening to this disk so I can't really comment other than it doesn't sound any better than the other Krall SACD.
Can anyone comment on their impressions of the Look in Your Eyes SACD. Are the Universal SACD releases “universally” bad. Before running out and purchasing the SCD-1 I would like to hear what other inmates have to say about this.
I have the Look Into Your Eyes SACD and find it very good in multichannel. No blanket over the speakers in my listening room.
Of course how we perceive the audio is very subjective. But I'm very happy with the recording.
I have both DK's SACDs. They both sound very impressive on my SCD-1. Although they are not the ultimate in transparency compared to other pure DSD recordings, I can almost hear a "living and breathing" DK singing in the dead center with the orchestra a few feet behind her. Can't expect more for only $13 a pop at Circuit City.com.
I do hear some higher than usual tape hiss on Track 6 (Got You Under My Skin) of When I Look In Your Eyes. Has anyone noticed the same thing?
its brushwork on the cymbals. This SACD seems to be a very literal transfer, and gains resolution where you would expect it to - you can hear everything going on in Diana's mouth - but loses in the HF.
but I did free shipping and should have them in a week or two.
I have Waltz For Debbie on the new K2 CD and I have the SACD and I find it more than adequate. I did just pick up the Moon Beams SACD and it sounds pretty decent upon initial listening.
Good luck and keep buying!
