I listen to different music when I am home than when I am away. At home I rarely listen to my headphones as I have a wonderful system and prefer to listen to "friendly" music, pop, jazz, classical, indie rock, etc. My headphones for many years now are the excellent Sennheiser HD600's. But I seldom wear them, as good as they sound they can't beat my speakers. When I am on the road or working out and listening solo to my Klipsh or Bose earbuds or car stereo I love to crank my heavy and extreme metal music. So I am thinking about a second pair of cans for listening to my really aggressive music at home without annoying whoever else is in the house, my wife just does not appreciate Swedish death metal! Her loss. The cans will be driven by my Creek OBH-21SE Headphone amplifier. Some ground rules are in order, these need to be closed back phones with serious bass, drive, and slam. They can have the mids and highs of my HD600's but the point is not to reproduce the qualities of that headphone. I find the HD600's to be kind of weak when asked to play something like Mastodon, Lamb Of God, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc. But I will definitely keep them around in case I need to listen to Jazz At The Pawnshop really late at night. Thanks

I think the Momentum's are similar to the HP50's. There you go.
Have you tried a vst for the ember? I am using JRiver 21 and tried this Sonarworks 21 day trial to eq http://www.audiomediainternational.com/recording/review-sonarworks-hd-reference-plug-in/04269. Used the Senn 800 vst and changed it around with this thread about half way down.http://www.head-fi.org/t/781268/the-diyrs-cookbook/210. Thought I recognized your handle from the Ember or Ember tube rolling threads.
I have several mid-priced (between $150 and $350), and I can recommend without hesitation the V Moda Crossfade M-100.
I listen to a lot of rock and these thing absolutely crush it! The tightest hardest hitting bass I have ever heard. While they are not as accurate as my Sennheisers, they are awesome for the likes of Rush, Van Halen, Metallica, Buck Cherry, Hinder, Creed etc....
Another plus is they are without a doubt the coolest looking cans I have as well. I love the fact that you can fully customize them to your taste.
Good luck.

Everybody likes to hear "the rest of the story" so here it is. I founds the Crossfade M-100's to be too fat for me, they were the opposite of my HD600's for sure. I got a lot of suggestions over at Steve Hoffman Forums and ended up with two sets of closed back phones. The first was the NAD VISO HP50 and the second the mighty Masssdrop Fostex TH-X00. The NAD's cost about half what the Fostex cost and they are not as revealing as them but they are both cut from the same cloth. They are my portables now. Both headphones do a fantastic job at kicking out the jams and they both posses fantastic bass profiles but without overwhelming the rest of the audio spectrum. The Fostex actually reproduce high quality sub bass and the highs are clear and more articulate. I also realized that my old Creek amp sucks. Especially a poor match for my old Sennheisers. A Garage 1217 Ember II now has pride of place on my home rack. Even with the amp change I still have a hard time listening to my HD600's anymore. Except for lighter fare. Too bright and not enough bass for the hard stuff.
Glad you found what you like.
My favorite closed backs are still my 3 year Sennheiser Momentum over ear - dead neutral.
The are also very lightweight and comfortable.
