I just bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x and really love them and may keep them as they have terrific detail and tone (with a bit of excessive bass but I like that too) however they are a bit small so the comfort level is down compared to the Sennheiser 449 I just bought as well.
I am thinking about trying some Grado's which are supposed to be vibrant (and if they were a bit more forward than the AT I would be fine with that) as long as the bass and total volume could compete.
From what I have read the Grado may be up my alley do you agree?
I know I can try the Grado out for free from Amazon but I am already returning the Sennheisers and do not want to abuse Amazon too much. Silly of me? I dunno...
fwiw I liked the 449 very much but it is a bit soft for my taste with rolled of highs and very light bass, they excell in the upper mids which is a beautiful thing but I want the rest too and they do not get very loud at all.
Also how accurate is the InnerFidelity website? Do you guys agree?
best,
Phil

I think the Grado is better than the 40 - the AT 50 however I like considerably more and bought a pair - and the build quality is better than the 40 - but it costs more $$ naturally.
Headphone buying can be tough - because at any given price point a different brand can put out something very good. I like the cheapie AKGs for example - bass heavy but still pretty good overall around $40. I liked the Senn 580 and 600 but the one priced in the middle 595 or something I thought sounded rather terrible for the money - go figure.
I don't like any can that presses on the ear - I will have to take them off shortly so no matter how good they may sound they're useless to me. Over the ear is more comfortable - to me. But of course they are bulkier.
thanks RGA I bought NAD Viso and love them
I owned a slightly different model in the past. They looked almost exactly like the "x" version. Compared to my Grado 60s, which I continue to use, the ATHs were lifeless, dull and muffled. Everything about the Grados is better; soundstage, imaging, realism, etc. When the earpads on the ATs began to shred after a few years (a relatively expensive repair), I threw them in the trash. Note that I only use tube amps. How much of the clarity and nuance of the Grados comes through with solid state I can only guess.

thanks for the post
I love my older model Grado 80's, but I have hearing loss over 6khz and do not find them as bright as many with near perfect hearing often do. They work great for me.
I have not heard the newer model 80's, but I would bet the sound has not drifted too far from the originals. Once thing for sure for me from now on is I will not buy cans that I have not auditioned first. No more buying based on reviews for me.

I think I like the over the ear method but I have not tried on ear yet
thanks for the input
Grados have a reputation for brightness. I like them. They are not noted for their bass particularly though they do have a little bump up in the mid-bass. However, the lower priced Grados fit on the ear which can be a bothersome feel. I bought G-Cushes for around the ear. Much more comfortable.
