looking for good outside noise attenuation, comfort, and sound quality.
I listen to classical.
Thanks Bob
Follow Ups:
I would recommend you read the reviews at Inner Fidelity
I'm thinking of a budget change to allow the prime, would like to hear from other AA members who have personally owned or audition it
Bob
I have owned mine for about two months and I love them very much! The reason I suggested them for you is that you listen to classical music
among others... I also own many Grados, SR325i, RS1i, PS500 and PS1000,
Denon 2000 and 7000, HiFiMan HE500, and Mr. Speakers Mad Dog and Alpha Dog.
I like all of them, but the Primes are way ahead of the pack, even competing competently in STAX territory.
There are 65 pages on head-fi devoted to the Primes which you may want to
read.
.
I have no experience with those.

Thanks Douger, I should have thought of checking there. I started reading and skimming the thread, kind of daunting to go through it all. Trying to pick useful things for myself. Wish I could audition somewhere near me in the Minneapolis area, but that's a long shot. I did talk to TTVJ and he thought my amp(Meier Corda Airetta) would be ok.
I like the Fostex TH900, they do leak some sound but sound very open for a closed headphone.

V-Moda M100
Audio Technica ATH-M50
Sennheiser Momentum
I have three recommendations; The V-Moda Crossfade 100's, Audio Technica ATH-M50, and the Sennheiser Momentum over ear.
I own these (and a few more). All are within your budget and easy to drive.
The V-Moda's are the bass champs of the trio. I wouldn't say they are grossly colored like Beats, far from it. They do the tightest deepest bass I have heard and if you listen to a lot of rock and techno they are a guilty pleasure. They are also customizable and the coolest looking with their industrial design. They are indestructible and run around $260.
The Audio Technica's are well balanced, comfortable, and are the budget champs of the three - about $140 on Amazon.
The Sennheiser's are the overall best of these in my opinion. They are the most balanced, dead nuetral, and light weight. For your musical tastes (classical) they would be my choice at $240 to $270. If however, you have large ears, they could be a tight fit.All have been well received by reviewers, audiophiles, and regular Joe's.
Good luck.

Also looking for a closed headphone. I'm looking for an on-ear just because i don't want something too big and bulky since i'd be wearing them at work. I also have sensitivity with higher frequencies which is making the search even more difficult. I'd actually like the highs to be rolled off if possible and a warmer sound. I need it to block outside noise a little bit, just what would be in an office environment. From all the reviews i've read i'm leaning towards the V-Moda XS.
If your looking for a set of cans that are less extreme with respect to high frequency extension than your on the right track with the V-Moda. In fact, the are diametrically opposed to the AKG 701 which I owned for a brief period, but ultimately sold because like you I am sensitive to too much high frequency response.
I have not heard the XS, so I will reserve comment on them, but I do have the Crossfade M100's, and they are awesome. If you listen to rock, then your going to love 'em!

I'd really like to go with an over ear headphone, but I would just feel too weird at my desk wearing something that large. Don't want to give the impression that i'm detached in another world when i'm supposed to be working. I alternate between my ipod and online talk shows/youtube music.
I have a pair of AKG Y50 I recently purchased that I want to send back. They are comfortable for a short time, then start to compress the back side of the ears a bit, plus the sound is more forward than I want. Nicely built headphones but when at the largest setting, they BARELY fit. Maybe I have a large head or more likely have low-sitting ears. Looking for something to get away from the in-ear ones i'm using now at work.
probably less than $300.00
Pick your impedance to match your source. Best closed headphone I've been able to find, but I managed to get the 32 Ohm version while it was still a current model. Use it with a USB powered headphone/amp/DAC.
Link below:
I think I demo'd these a while back at Guitar Center but ended up with a pair of AKG K240. I like to wear full size outside when I can but the open 240 picks up WAY too much wind noise, making them useless unless the day is calm. I was however very lucky and found a pair of soft earpads for the 240 from reading some posting somewhere with a phone number and then contacting an individual associated with the company. I never saw the velour pads available anywhere else.
I really want something that won't absorb air/wind and would also use them for outdoor ice skating. I see Sennheiser has a few closed models in the $100+ range.
I used to have the 271's, you can get the velour pads on Amazon
+1 the 16 ohm version

Since the Mr. Speakers Alpha Dog, recommended below, is not within your price range, get the headphones on which the Alpha Dog is based: the Fostex T50RP ($130). Essentially, Mr. Speakers retains the planar-magnetic driver, which excellent. They then 3D print the shell, replace the earpads, and add a suspension headband for comfort. And probably perform other mods.
There are monster threads on modifying the T50RP on head-fi and other headphone sites. Essentially, you kill any resonance by applying plasticine or Blu-tack to the inside of the plastic shell and fill it with wool or cotton.
Then, buy the lambskin earpads ($60 and well worth it) and the leather suspension ($15) from Mr. Speakers. Yeah, I know, it's disproportionate to spend another $75 on a $130 headphone, but it improves comfort, isolation, and sound.
Is it as good as the Alpha Dog? Probably not. I think the SQ difference is small and the price difference is huge.
You don't mention a price range, but Mr. Speakers Alpha Prime is one of
the best, $999.99 plus shipping.
