I have 16 hours on these now, and a lot of progress has occurred. I have been very happy with my Alpha Dogs since May. When I learned that the Primes were in the works I thought that I could not afford another thousand bucks, but might consider upgrading... I have been living very
austerely and said that I could exist on ramen and mac n cheese if necessary. The decision was wise, these are really excellent! I knew they would be, just didn't know how long it would take. The first hour was not bad, just not close to potential, but at 10 hours it started knocking my socks off!
I am hearing deeper into the music than before, with no apparent veiling.
The Songs of Distant Earth by Mike Oldfield has many complex layers and
harmonies, all very well presented and easy to hear.
The Alpha Prime likes power, I use my Van Alstine Transcendance 8+
preamp which has a very good hp opamp but backed by 6cg7 tubes in the
linestage. It sounds great both for my phones and main sytem.
The Prime headphones will definitely get you into the high end neighborhood at a reasonable price!

Wow, yet another headphone to worry about. Times are definitely good for us headphone guys.
How would you compare the Primes with the Alph Dogs. Also will they offer an upgrade to the Alphadogs to turn it into a Prime?
I cannot answer your questions because I own neither. Perhaps your question was meant for Douger?
Fortunately I was able to keep my Alpha Dogs which I love. There is a trial upgrade program, for 30 sets and it's full. Latest update is that those drivers which had already been modified to make AD's are having problems with the further mods to go to AP's. I don't know how much the upgrade will cost if continued.
The AD's are excellent, rich and full with great bass, excellent midrange, and good treble. I find them a great addition to my stable of Grado's, RS1i, PS500 and PS1000, Denon 7000, HiFiMan HE500, and other lesser models.
I was expecting that the AD's would be my last purchase.
The AP's offer more air which equals soundstage. When I heard them at RMAF I considered them very similar to STAX SR-009's but with stronger bass which I like. Not real heavy but just a little more slam...
Dan (Mr. Speakers) drives them with a Cavalli Liquid Glass amp and a Lyr and a Burson which I did not audition. I use my Van Alstine Transcendance
8+ preamp and it sounds great. If you want to get into the STAX/ABYSS
neighborhood you will get extra detail and definition, bringing you closer
to a live experience... for $1000!
I am simply a fan, not affiliated with Mr. Speakers other than being a happy customer.
