After hearing the Stax lineup on a recent trip to Japan, I knew I had to get hold of some electrostatics for long term evaluation. My budget dictated used...and older models to boot.
I've ended up with both SRXmk3's and Lambda SR-A's. Both being driven by energizers not dedicated Stax amps. I have to say I'm amazed at what 1970's technology sounds like.
Music sounds like real music. Timbre is spot on...good recordings sound amazing, bad recordings not so much. I really don't have any desire to go newer or more expensive. And I have to say every other headphone I own or have owned or listened to sounds broken.
I should say that I have a pretty good source and line stage/amp ahead of the energizer...I don't know that it would sound as good with something not up to snuff.
Crazy good sound for not crazy money.
Follow Ups:
I have a set of Lambda Pros that my ex-wife gave me for Christmas in 1990. They took one trip for maintenance since I have owned them and they still are excellent.
The Lambda Pros are still here but the ex-wife is thankfully gone. I guess Stax products should be famous for their lasting quality too?

We don't shush around here!
Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
I once had a Stax SRX III with a 7 non-pro energizer.
Enjoyed it for a while but my 30 year old Beyer DT990 revealed that the Stax mids were too un-natural and the detail of my DT990 was much better.
I eventually sold it, but wished I still had id (just for kicks)

Have a mediocre Stax energizer, but would love to hear them driven by something like an SRTM1 or SRTM1W...
Sorry, but Stax FTW - I'd go Lambda if I could. :)
Are they Gamma Pro's?
1) don't assume the energizer isn't good because it's a lesser model. I have a 6sb and a 7sb here right now and I think the 6 is better.
2) I ended up with 2 Lambda SR-Alpha's...if you are interested, I'm going to sell one for cheap...it needs some work, but nothing that can't be fixed.

So - not an optimum setup.
SR-3 as back-up.

The little old ladies wait in wild anticipation for the meetings of the Double-A-C-ASSN...
"every other headphone I own or have owned or listened to sounds broken."
This is why I have now sold off all my non-electrostat headphones.
After the original Omega and Omega II, Stax seems to have taken a wrong turn towards a more ehm.."accurate" (or thinner, brighter, more etched) sound. I do love their current flagship SR009, but a little system tweaking and adjustment is still needed to tone down things a bit.
O yes! I am using a pair of 1969 SR-3'S with a SRM-T1s and completely freaked the early Beatles on Parlaphone are great! Enjoy
Never sell the SRM T1S!
STAX R&D still to this day, uses the T1S as a reference, as I read in a tour of the factory, as noted in a Head FI forum thread.
Try to find low noise RCA clear top tubes from the 60's.
They periodically show up on tubeworld.com.
Search Head Fi for T1S balance and offset adjustments.
The SRX MKIII sound very, very good even today. I just listened to mine from 1980 last week.
Save for the SR-009. I just got a pair today, from price japan.com.
I thought the Lambda Nova Signature was perfect, and as far as you could go.
The SR-009's are BEYOND BELIEF! That is a fact. Cost be dammed.
Thanx for that Potzrebie I could use all the info I can get , next will be a more modern set of phones.
