I'm glad I have been procrastinating on a headphone purchase. I have been vacillating between different headphones and the amp's I would have to buy to support them. The OPPO's came available just in time. The OPPO's will be my upgrade from my Sennheiser HD280 Pro.The OPPO has an amazing Sensitivity, 102 dB in 1 mW. I can use my OPPO 105 headphone connection and be just fine or use my receiver.
The headphone amp choices were giving me a headache. Tubes are not my thing. I got turned off of tubes when my Dad used to drag me to the local drug store to test out tubes from our broken TV in the early 50's. Most of the drug stores in our area had tube testers back in those days. I never wanted anything to do with tubes after that.

Caveat emptor: not everyone hears the same thing, esp. Flagship models. Beware of the bandwagon and snob effects. After being disappointed by both the LCD-2 and HD800, I got together a group of 5-6 seasoned, older "audiophiles" and they listened to these two on my headphone amp (DNA Stratus), as well as a Sugden and Vincent headphone amp in the store. They were compared to an older HD598, HD600, HD650 and K701.
The consensus (100%) was that HD800 did not do well compared to all of the comparison cans and the LCD-2s were rated below K701 and the HD650. All of the people there were jazz and classical music listeners and that is what we listened to.
This goes vastly (but not completely) against the grain of what general opinions are on head-fi.org
I will never buy another set of headphones without having heard them first!
Observe, before you think. Think before you open your yap. Act on the basis of experience.
Received my Oppo PM-1s yesterday and using the headphone amp out on my Oppo BDP-105. They are great sounding cans. I have Sennheiser HD-580s, Sennheiser HD-590s, Sennheiser HD-600s, Sennheiser HD-650s, AKG K701s and Bowers & Wilkins P5s. PM-1s are much more detailed. Pull the trigger.
The trigger has been pulled. I should have them by the middle of next week. Thanks for the info. They will be plugged into the OPPO 105 as soon as I get them.
Great, you won't be disappointed. Listening with that same set-up right now.
It would be great if you could provide your impression for us, after you've had a chance to give them a good listen.
I've also been considering them and heard them very briefly recently. I thought they were excellent but really needed more time and diverse music samples in the demonstration.
Thanks.
I listen to mainly classical and jazz. SACDs, RBCDs, down loaded DSD & FLAC files. I have using Sennheiser HD-650s up till now. I hear more detail and seem to have a better sound stage.
